I went through my bookmarks today and noticed alot of the old unaccesible threads and went down memory lane. Where is everybody? So many I can't list but I wonder where they went or if screen names have been changed.

There was one in my estimation who stood above the others. He was a writer who maintained his ideological convictions in a liberal work environment. His writings evoked the same spirit of independence and rugged individualism that my family imparted on me as I was growing up. I believe he said his habitat was the Los Padres National Forest which overlooks the most spiritual refuge on earth, the Big Sur.

I identify with that particular geographical location as a place where I in my youth reaffirmed my spiritual and ideological convictions after taking pause to reflect on my life before continuing on.

In college I realized something was missing in my life. There were so many things I wanted to do and experience before I chose my vocation. There were too many important decisions to make at one time and I felt that I didn't have enough experience to make a thorough evaluation. So I took a semester off and went to Pacific Grove where I supported myself by taking a job in Cannery Row in Monterey.

Some of the workers at California Packing were the same workers whom John Steinbeck wrote about in his novel, Cannery Row. In fact, one of them asked me if I was familiar with Steinbeck's writings. I nodded yes (but I hadn't really gotten into it or read the book until years later). Some of these people dropped out of society and reemerged in Cannery Row for one reason or another maybe to forget or to find themselves. I really don't know. Some, I was told had even been professionals. One day at break, one of the old-timers came over to me and told me that they had had a discussion and decided that I should return to college. Although I had already planned to, I told him that I was considering it and expressed some sort of appreciation that they were thinking of my best interest. Later, when I read the novel, I realized how I had actually experienced the same type of group benevolence that Steinbeck portrayed through the characters in his book. What I gained from that experience was a sense of respect for people based on their spirituality instead of basing it on the status of what job they hold.

I lived next door to the Seventeen Mile Drive around Pebble Beach which incidentally was free at that time. I remember sitting by the rocks surrounding the Lone Cypress and enjoying the scenery of jagged rocks, twisted Cypress and the deep blue sea. I thought of becomming a writer but was realistic enough to know that I didn't possess the skills to become a really good writer. I made the trip to Carmel on a weekly basis as it was at the other end of the Seventeen Mile Drive. There on Ocean Avenue I would visit the shops and get a bite to eat. Years later I discovered a great wine (there at one of the outdoor cafes) which I discovered by accident and still buy on occassion as a special treat. I just remembered something that I'm kicking myself for. Four years ago I bought a large Kincade canvass depicting a rainy late afternoon scene on the main drive in Carmel entitled Ocean Avenue for $900 without the frame. I liked it so much as it evoked memories of the place but was afraid that it would get knocked off the wall and ruined by an eathquake so I returned it the next day. The last time I looked at it in the gallerie it was selling for $8,000.

Just to the south of Carmel lay the Big Sur. That is a spiritual place to me. I couldn't do it justice by describing it so I won't. I spent many hours there reflecting. It was where I was spiritually reborn. I still visit it when I can but it has been nearly ten years since I last saw it. It's time to visit it again.

Well Ta..., aren't you sorry you pinged me. You caught me in a reflective mood (which happens now and then since I'm working 60-70 hours a week and 5 hours average sleep) and I responded with this long rant. In any event, it was therapeutic for me. By the way, the poster I was referring to was Coyote. His icon of the lone running coyote symbolized to me a willingness to stand apart from the crowd and run with one's own convictions. His articles and comments touched a positive nerve with me that beckoned me to stay the course as a free, independent, rugged individualist. His habitat was the same habitat that represented the birth place of my own spirituality.

Um, I think we win Mudboy because we're like the only contest-makers. Kinda sparse nominations.

TaRaRa, it does too work, it's just that you need *a lot* of bribes to win.

Someone mentioned sinkspur. Yes, I follow that name. I also like physicist and radioastronomer. Also, fresh back from his bender with a new sense of humor, Timesink.

But for my money, the best at finding trouble and not avoiding it, the person I'm most likely to follow around, the person who in fact I quite regularly am seen with here is (drumroll)ME!

Why, the things that ME posts are just so insightful. I'd almost be inclined to post a vanity thread to discuss ME but, well, I've already one that. :) I only hope that I continue to live up to my high expectations for myself. ;)
