Muslim groups have expressed concern that the law will result in the detention and deportation of hundreds of thousands of Arab and Islamic immigrants who arrived illegally or whose visas have expired. And this is wrong because...?

Now, how many Americans have to die before Arabs are considered security threats, 100, 1000, 5000 or is it more?
Would 50,000 have to die in a relatively large number of attacks or would we be looking for mass killings like in NYC and Washington (which were really not successful when you look at the potential) to begin deporting the "ones" who are obviously security threats.
I think we should have an idea up front.

"But officials said the administration plans to reassure Muslim groups that special procedures enacted over the last year will be limited to those immigrants regarded as security threats. "
And just how is the US government going to determine that thousands/millions of illegal muslims are security threats?

Good. I have never been in favor of deportation, which allows the maggots to regroup in their native sh*tholes and plan more activities against us. Keep them DETAINED indefinitely. Then execute them, or deport them after we have neutralized the threat and turned their countries into sandboxes.

The Bush administration has rejected the prospect of mass deportations of Muslim illegal aliens...

Can they collect benefits?
I am shocked to see how many 'immigrants' collect all kinds of awards.....starting with SSI.
They sure learn fast how the system works!

Sounds to me as if President Bush and the Republican Party has gone "wobbly" on us on this issue.
As my FRiend, Congressman "Duke" Cunningham once said: "What is it about 'illegal' you do not understand?"
As far as I am concerned, every person who is in this country illegally should be arrested, detained and immediately deported, and the sooner the better!
And we should militarize the Mexican and Canadian border ASAP to keep other illegals out!
I like "W," but on this issue and on the border control issue, he and the Republicans are not only wrong, they are violating the very laws they swore to uphold when they took their oaths of office.

This is just like the situation with the U.N. The Security Council passes a resolution saying Iraq must disarm, but does nothing when Iraq ignores the resolution.
The U.S. passes a law saying that illegal aliens must be deported. But when caught, only those illegal aliens deemed a security threat are deported.
Who's the hypocrite now?

Nothing like a suicide pact to make my day.
There is a very good reason for this policy. If an immigrant feels there is a risk that they might be deported, there little chance that they will contact authorities if they overhear of are aware of suspicious activity. This policy is meant to send a signal that if one cooperates, they will not be deported. Remember how we criticized Clinton for gutting our intelligence by moving away from developing inside sources to dependence on high tech? Well we need tips from the inside, and this policy is intended to help cultivate such.
But of course all the above logic will be lost on the one-note wonder crowd. Its so much easier to cry "Free Barabas" over and over.
