I think there was a very good reason for the orange "high" alert.
when a story says that it is based on something in time magazine, you can be pretty sure that the original report has gained notice here already, doncha suppose?
dep
Remember too that 9/11 itself was supposed to occur earlier in the year (sometime in the summer) and it was delayed.
It also doesn't mean the event wasn't stopped before it happened, which is true in more cases than we know. According to one interview on FNC, they don't publicize their successes very often, lest they give away their methods and informants.
Yet, the media has been strangely silent on this angle, except for Time. I haven't heard it discussed on any of the networks, although one commentator on FNC alluded to it briefly.
Saddam has a strategic objective and a strategic plan in place.
The strategic objective is the defeat of America. Since Saddam knows an Iraqi defeat of America is an impossibility, his strategic plan is to initiate a war between Islam and America.
I believe Saddam is prepared to sacrifice the Iraqi people to achieve his goal.
If Saddam and his surrogates attack first, then the next battle will remain between Saddam and the U.S. and most Muslim nations will respect the United States right to defend itself.
If, however, the U.S. attacks in the next several weeks absent a U.N. authorized resolution(China will veto any attempt to get another resolution authorizing force), Saddam may be successful in igniting a war between the U.S. and a significant portion of Islam, after Israel becomes involved.
Had the Bush Administration been truthful from the start and told the world that Saddam was behind 9-11 and the anthrax mailings and asked for a Declaration of War from Congress and invoked our right of self defense,I don't believe world opinion and old allies be opposing us the way they are today. I believe many in the Islamic world would have respected the United States' right to wage war in self defense.
This PR nightmare of a preemptive war is a tough sale in the world and it plays right into the strategic plan of Saddam , in my opinion.
I believe there will not be another major attack from Saddam's surrogates on U.S. soil until a major offensive against Iraq begins.
All the more reason for deportations taking place in mass. The liberals have fought this from the beginning. What will it take to make them see what is right before their eyes?
***FBI.gov: "Statement for the Record of Robert S. Mueller, III Director Federal Bureau of Investigation on War on Terrorism Before the Select Committee on Intelligence of the United States Senate Washington, D.C." (STATEMENT SNIPPET: "The al-Qaeda network will remain for the foreseeable future the most immediate and serious threat facing this country. Al-Qaeda is the most lethal of the groups associated with the Sunni jihadist cause, but it does not operate in a vacuum; many of the groups committed to international jihad -- including the Egyptian al-Gama'at al-Islamiyya, Lebanese 'Asbat al-Ansar, Somali al-Ittihad al-Islami, and Algerian Salafist Group for Call and Combat (GSPC) --- offer al-Qaeda varying degrees of support. * FBI investigations have revealed a widespread militant Islamic presence in the US. * We strongly suspect that several hundred of these extremists are linked to al-Qaeda. * The focus of their activities centers primarily on fundraising, recruitment, and training. Their support structure, however, is sufficiently well-developed that one or more groups could be ramped up by al-Qaeda to carry out operations in the US homeland. Despite the progress the US has made in disrupting the al-Qaeda network overseas and within our own country, the organization maintains the ability and the intent to inflict significant casualties in the US with little warning. * The greatest threat is from al-Qaeda cells in the US that we have not yet identified. The challenge of finding and rooting out al-Qaeda members once they have entered the US and have had time to establish themselves is our most serious intelligence and law enforcement challenge.") ***CIA.gov: "DCI's Worldwide Threat Briefing (As Prepared for Delivery) The Worldwide Threat in 2003: Evolving Dangers in a Complex World" ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Mr. Chairman, as you know, the United States Government last week raised the terrorist threat level. We did so because of threat reporting from multiple sources with strong al-Qa'ida ties. The information we have points to plots aimed at targets on two fronts -- in the United States and on the Arabian Peninsula. It points to plots timed to occur as early as the end of the Hajj, which occurs late this week. And it points to plots that could include the use of a radiological dispersion device as well as poisons and chemicals. The intelligence is not idle chatter on the part of terrorists and their associates. It is the most specific we have seen, and it is consistent with both our knowledge of al-Qa'ida doctrine and our knowledge of plots this network -- and particularly its senior leadership -- has been working on for years.")
