Official urges families to buy guns Associated Press

WINSTON-SALEM - A city alderman peeved some residents of his ward Thursday when he told them to keep guns in their homes for protection in case of a disaster.

Republican Alderman Vernon Robinson had joined Mayor Allen Joines for a meeting with about 50 people at Green Street United Methodist Church.

Robinson has been representing the city and working with different agencies, such as the Red Cross, to make sure that the city has plans in place in the event of a national disaster or terrorist attack.

This week, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said that every American family should have enough water and food to last at least three days. The Bush administration also suggested that families stock up on duct tape and heavy plastic sheeting in case it becomes necessary to seal windows and heating vents after a strike with chemical, biological or radiological weapons.

Robinson said people who stocked up on food and water would need guns to fend off people who had no supplies. Federal officials would have recommended guns in the warning if not for anti-gun sentiment in the country, Robinson said.

His comments drew sighs and negative comments from some residents.

"What planet is this guy from?" one man said under his breath.

Robinson refused to back down.

"I invite everybody to put a sticker on their house saying, 'I'm a liberal, and I don't have a gun in my house,"' he said.

Dan Houston said people in his neighborhood shouldn't need weapons.

"There is an alternative to having guns in your home," Houston said. "I would say to my brothers and sisters, if you need water, you can come to my house."

If something BIG happens, I'm heading to the mountains...literally. I'll find a sheltered area holed out and can see people coming for thousands of yards. Ok not really...I just like the AK style.

That's how I prepared for y2k. I bought ammo. If something went wrong a midnight I'd simply use my guns to take what I need by force.

Advertised on local TV the other day was a news tease, "The most safest community in the valley?"

I don't have many other details but a developer is planning on building a new community in the north west part of town - and you must be a registered gun owner to buy!

I thought that was great!

Having a couple of hundred bucks stashed in case the ATM machines' internet connections break isn't a bad idea, but it's a rather mild "emergency".

Still, I see a lot of "survivalist" types who plan only for total societal breakdown, and that can lead you to be poorly prepared for much more common occurances.

Let's all make a note of that... In an emergency, Mr. Dan Houston has plenty of water and won't be in a position to object to its "liberation".

If you have to be registered I don't want to live there.

Vernon isn't the most pragmatic Republican politician in North Carolina, but I have always admired his moxey.

It would sure have been interesting if he had won his race for Superintendent of Education a few years back.

He's an African American Republican who would be a great Member of Congress. I think he's running for Burr's seat.

Armed vs disarmed?
I choose ARMED. How 'bout you? (like I need to ask)
Wonder how long it will take the peacenik to change his tune when the "brothers" and "sisters" are butchering his wife and kids and using him for noisy entertainment?

He could team up with Rep. Ron Paul, another maverick "pol". Vernon has never been a "go along to get along" type, and he seems to have his head screwed on right for most of the important issues. Hope he can win in a congressional run.

"Had the whole family around the table the other night. Breaking down and re-assembling our home arsenal. They all did reral good. We're ready."

AND I WOULD ADVISE EVERY ONE OF YOU TO ASSEMBLE YOUR FAMILIES AROUND THE KITCHEN TABLE AND CHOOSE A LOCATION - AWAY FROM THE CITY IF YOU LIVE NEAR A LARGE ONE - WHERE YOU CAN RENDEZVOUS AFTER ANY ATTACK. THAT GOES FOR KIDS PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS.

Much to powerful for home defense. May I suggest one of these?

Not so usefull for dropping an Islamakazie outside the range of his "personal destructive device".

Ah, the mighty 12 gauge. Very useful at close range. Drop's 99.9% of (unarmored) perps with one well-placed shot.

Behold the power of buckshot!
