Call for creation of Darwin Day
From Professor Simon Blackburn and others
Sir, We, the undersigned, support proposals for the creation of a new public holiday, Darwin Day, on February 12.
This is the birthday of Charles Darwin, one of the greatest British scientists and thinkers that ever lived. At a time when creationism appears to be gaining ground in English schools, the public celebration of Charles Darwins contribution to modern science could send out a clear message of support for scientific thinking.
It will be the 200th anniversary of his birth in 2009, and we very much hope that this new public holiday will be in place by then.
Yours etc,
SIMON BLACKBURN,
FRANCIS CRICK,
RICHARD DAWKINS,
RICHARD DOLL,
PHILIP PULLMAN,
CLAIRE RAYNER,
c/o British Humanist Association,
47 Theobalds Road, WC1X 8SP.

Oh contraire...it is the most basic of the Darwinian concepts...

"I find it amazing that in the year 2003 people who claim intelligence can dismiss in one hand the science that allows them to potentially live past the age of 30 years and deny the science that describes the history of life on our planet."
Any theories about what may or may not have occurred millions of years ago have nothing to do with the fact that people live past the age of 30. Bones and fossils and the assumptions about what they mean simply have no bearing on the development, testing and implementation of modern medicine.

May day Haaaa!
Blackburn: Memo to self--
We are losing debates with creationists, we look stupid, we don't have any proof, we are short on evidence. Let's bolster our argument by having a holiday-- maybe emphasize the color black, play spin-the-bottle, include lots of dice games, light fireworks to remind us of the big bang.

Yes, Apr 1 is my vote!
"Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom,
Let not the mighty man boast in his might,
Nor let the rich man boast in his riches;
But let him who boasts glory in this,
That he understands and knows Me,
That I am the LORD...."

I find it amazing that in the year 2003 people who claim intelligence can dismiss in one hand the science that allows them to potentially live past the age of 30 years and deny the science that describes the history of life on our planet.Alas, Creationists find denial easier than actual thought...and it also keeps God in a nice little box.
Same stuff, different thread.

Bones and fossils and the assumptions about what they mean simply have no bearing on the development, testing and implementation of modern medicine. The same techniques and procedures that allow for the development of medicines and vaccines are used in all of science - including paleontology, geology and biology.

There is a very simple question, the answer to which is very telling. Where did the data stored in the DNA in the very first cell come from? Information Science says that it is impossible to create information without intelligence. Odd that no reputable evolutionary scientist has ever been able to answer this question apart from "it just happened."

[atheism] is the most basic of the Darwinian concepts...Heredity, variation, selection. I forget, which of those equates to atheism again?

Dakmar...
I took a few minutes to decipher that post, and I must say I agree with a lot of what you said.
fC...
These were the Classical liberals...founding fathers-PRINCIPLES---stable/SANE scientific reality/society---industrial progress...moral/social character-values(private/personal) GROWTH(limited NON-intrusive PC Govt/religion---schools)!
Dakmar...
Where you and I diverge is on the Evolution/Communism thing. You seem to view Darwin and evolution as the beginning of the end for enlighted, moral civilization, while I think Marx, class struggle, and the "dictatorship of the proletariat" are the true dangers.
God bless you, I think we both have a common enemy in the BRAVE-NWO.

I think you are confused about the use of the word "information" in this context. DNA's information is what we get out of it; not what someone put into it.

From what I see on these threads, "serious civil debate" is sadly lacking. Real progress is never made. Creationists continue to spout religious dogma without honest consideration of scientific evidence. But what is even more frightening than their abject denial of evidence is their collective determination to place religion and science on equal footing in the classroom. Religion and science can never be equated, for the former is faith-based, while the latter is driven to collect factual evidence to be rigorously tested against a hypothesis.
Knowing that I place religion in the metaphysical realm, do you really wish to debate me on this issue?
