WASHINGTON (AP) -- Three serious reactions have been reported out of more than 100,000 military vaccinations against smallpox, the Army's deputy director for military vaccines said Thursday.
Col. John D. Grabenstein told an Institute of Medicine panel there have been two cases of encephalitis and one heart infection associated with the vaccinations. All three people have recovered and returned to duty, he said.

My question is is this lower than originally predicted or higher? I remember 1 death per 1,000,000 people was viewed as likely. However, given the fact of anly three serious reactions in 100,000 people I am wondering if even this was way to high an estimate as I sort of recall but am unsure that they were predicting 20 to thirty serious reactions per 100,000.

Col. John D. Grabenstein It doesn't help that the military vaccine director is named "Tombstone".

I got a seriously itchy rash after I received my smallpox vaccination in '82. It lasted only a couple of days. I'm not sure what that means, though.

What kind of nation of wusses are we turning into? I remember when every schoolchild had polio, smallpox, and DPT shots. People weren't worried about the .000002 probability of a bad reaction, since they remembered the very high probability of permanent disability or death if they got one of these diseases. Its the same vaccine, guys.

I'll take my chances with the vaccine ... they need to let it out for public use.

Normal? From my neck down to my ankles? As far as I know, no one else in my company got a rash.
What would happen if I got another smallpox shot? Is there a possibility of an anaphylactic reaction?

Seems like a generalized reaction..usually it is around the site. Did you have any trouble breathing or swelling?

No, I just had a pronounced (and
extremely itchy) rash practically all over.
I have had an analphylactic reaction to morphine, so I am very aware of the symptoms.

Isn't an itchy rash a prelude to a more severe reaction the next time?
