"Sorry all...I can't resist : THEY FOUND CHIEF MOOSE'S WHITE TRUCK AGAIN!" Nope - Moose was being impersonated by a raghead.

"Speaking of suspicious activity, have any San Francisco Bay area FReepers heard anything about a zodiac boat yesterday near the Golden Gate Bridge that was spotted by the US Coast Guard and then fled?" Attack the GG bridge - how proposterous!!
That's DimRat and Diane Feinstein's turf - no way they would mess with Diane! (she is on their side)

Are there air units prersent?
What is the local press saying if anything?

Walked through Times Square on my way to work - they had a couple of SWAT guys with black masks and machine guns standing outside the broadway tickets booth. Watching it on TV somehow doesn't have the same impact as it does up close and personal. For the first time since September 11, it felt like a war zone again.Sounds like that's as much fun as living within walking distance of City Hall, the NYSE, the Fed, etc., is.

I love the Glenn Beck showGlenn's one of my favorite talkers. Wickedly funny, well spoken and well thought out arguments. I think he is the future of talk radio.

We just got a news bulletin that canines alerted to an abandoned blue van at the entrance to Lackland AFB in San Antonio...possible explosives...SAPD called...bomb squad has removed a box from the van...buildings within a 1 block area have been evacuated...SAPD is requesting anyone in the area not use their cell phones...waiting on more news before posting a breaking thread.

NYC ought to have a law forbidding driver's licenses to people whose homelands have not yet developed the internal combustion engine or automobiles.
In the normal course of technological evolution, this would keep most of the unfriendly Sons of Muhammed (May Peace Be Upon Him) off the roads for another 5,000 years.

All jokes aside, I do wonder about the specific nature of the alerts to the NYC and DC police departments, and am very glad the police are so on point right now.
If ONE terrorist attack is stopped and lives are saved due to the extra precautions taken by local security, then the whining and cries of 'racism' and 'profiling' by those insisting they were unfairly targeted will be more than worth it.

It was a guy in a wetsuit in an inflatable raft near the Bay Bridge (also coming out of SF for the non-CA crowd) early Tuesday morning according to this
KTVU in Oakland story. No, they didn't catch him.

It's true.
SAN ANTONIO -- Lackland Air Force Base is investigating a possible explosive found near the military base late Wednesday morning.
Lackland Air Force Base officials said a canine team alerted security officers to an odor of a possible explosive inside a van that was trying to enter the Gate 2 at Springvale and Valley Hi.
A remote-controlled robot retrieved a package from the van. It's not immediately known if it was an explosive.
Lackland Air Force Base officials said the van was being driven by some contract workers who were going to conduct work at the base. The workers are being detained and questioned by base officials

Latest is that it wasn't really abandoned, but rather that they didn't have their insurance card or other paperwork, and they just walked onto the base, so their own personal paperwork (badges?) must have been in order. They were repair contracters of some sort. Situation still fluid, gate still closed, some evacuations. Probably nothing, but you have to run the wickets anyway once the dogs alerted to possible explosives. The base is not shut down, but that particular gate is closed. It's not even the most commonly used one. Lackland has traditionally been low security. I've gone onto the base twice in an airport shuttle van while they delieved passengers to the various schools there, even though I didn't have any reason to be there and could have been anybody, rather than an ex AF officer myself. I found that a bit appauling. Of course that was before 9-11 and definitely before threatcon Bravo was effect.

Thanks for the info...I frequent Brooks AFB myself, have to go there every day as one of my job duties. Brooks, even though it is now a city base, still has good security, especially if you enter any of the buildings. KTSA just reported that the gate is now open...nothing further, but must have been a false alarm...at least I hope so.
