DOG SHOW BREEDS CONTEMPT
NY Post ^ | February 11, 2003 | Andrea Peyser

No sooner had I walked backstage at Madison Square Garden yesterday when I was brushed aside by a beautifully groomed, purebred bitch who possessed the manners of a mongrel.

She was a dog owner.

"A- -hole!" the high-strung biped ranted, just loud enough to drive a sensitive cocker spaniel to the kibble.

You're right. The image shows up fine when I preview it. Let's see if this works better.

Glad the Brittany won the sporting group. I've been a Brit owner for almost a year. My first dog ever. Did a lot of research before adopting from a rescue organization. My guy is now 3 years old and 48 lbs. He is my running buddy. I run about 40 miles a week with him. He can run! And loves it!! The photo below is from before I adopted him and got him in shape and trimmed up.

Nice pup. Just two weeks ago. I lady approched me with a young Brit offering her for adoption. I had to reluctantly say "no" as I have three other dogs. When I walked away the dog did this little cute howling yip that seemed to say, "You idiot, you had your chance." We have two mixed breeds we recovered and a manipulative Basset my daugther left behind.

I can see the Bassets just fine. What great looking dogs. We had one years ago when we lived in the country. I couldn't keep her home & she was hit on the road & killed.

Are you familiar with the P.B.G.V.s? Do you know anything about them? WE have a long haired Jack Russell Terrier that has that same look except he is MUCH smaller.

I foster homed a young female over the holidays. She was a little smaller than my guy but spunky. They played for hours on end. It was a trip running with both of them like a sled dog team.

If you add Playing to the mix and barking at everything, person and animal passing by, that would be my yorkie. He owns us, not the other way around.

Yes Vards, the AKC keeps stud books. They take money for giving out slips of papers. These slips of papers are worth actual money for the slum lord puppy mill owners. If you think that the AKC should take no responsability for being the sole reason for the creation of puppy mills, then I have a little group you might be interested in - Democrats.

LOL! OK lets get your line of reasoning. The AKC keeps stud books. They have a strict and limited set of rules for applying to the stud books. People apply for registration in the stud books. Some people who apply for registration in the stud books also run commercial operations regulated by the states. So the states (usually Dept of Agriculture) have legal authority to inspect conditions and shut down operations yet it's the AKC that's responsible for puppy mills?!

The AKC keeps stud books and does it well. People who do something unethical in an attempt to capitalize on another's reputation are responsible for their own behavior.

Transfering responsiblilty from those who do wrong to someone who was doing his job is remarkably liberal of you. Are you one of those people who think it's the car company's fault if you drive drunk and kill someone?

I've got news for you, if you're attracked to the animal rights wacko side you belong at DU not Free Republic.

PS - The reason AKC "papers" are respected is that the AKC has worked to keep good books for many decades. If you have a registration problem they hop on it and work to resolve it properly.

"There's plenty of information on the Internet about the different German Shepherd breeds if you're interested. Professionals are NOT importing dogs due to "supply and demand". There is no sortage of Germna Shepherd puppies in the U.S. -- they're just the wrong kind."

I knew someone who did this kind of work. He needed a constant supply of young dogs that he polished into police dogs. He initially started with American dogs then switched to imported to get a consistant supply of dogs with hard temperment (American breeders tend to breed for pet temperments and in this sense some American dogs can be the "wrong kind").

A quick search of the internet will get you many hits of people who do this kind of work. It's not at all unusual for dogs to be AKC and do bomb detection, SAR, and police, etc.
For instance:
http://www.malinoishandler.com/background.htm
http://www.landheimk9.com/
http://www.k9trainers.com/south_carolina.htm

You link was interesting and I agree with her that dog C (note she also refers to "specialty shows") is not of working conformation but I would disagree with her that dog B is. The trouble with dog B is that although he may be trained for work (and therefore marketable) he will not hold up to hard work for long. Her composite show dog may actually be of two different types. Best In Show suggests that one's an all-breed show winner and Grand Victor is a specialty title. Usually in GSD's a competitor in one ring isn't competitive in the other.
None of this has anything to do with what organization the dog is registered with. Conformation shows are only one competition that the AKC runs. They do a lot of field trials, tracking trials, obedience, agility, herding etc. All dogs that compete in these other venues are also AKC registered. What characteristics breeders emphasize in their programs is not regulated by the AKC.

I have bred, shown and sold spayed and neutered pets to life time homes for 35 years -- your pics are lovely -- here is one of mine, and I have his descendants as well ...Zeb, or Sarahtoga, is the Number 5 in the Hall of Fame for producing Champions.

He is on the pedigree of this year's Schip, Flame, which took BOB and Group 4.

I could and am, writing a book covering a lot of these comments!

I had a Schip a while back. He came from poor stock which resulted in his being put down early due to a couple of bad epileptic seizures.

He was so incredibly smart and insatiably curious. I remember once he scratched at a door simply to have a look. It happened to be a closet door. Once he had a look inside, he found nothing and moved on. If you made a funny sound with your lips -one he's never heard before- he'd jump up on you in a heart beat and look at your face from 5 inches away with his head cocked trying to figure out what that was.

I could go on.

The pics aren't mine, I pulled them off the web.

Do you still breed them?

Jean
