Man tried to fry eggs in carton
A young Norwegian, hungry after a night on the town in Bergen, decided to fry himself a few eggs when he got home. The next thing he knew, his apartment was full of smoke and angry firefighters.
The young man, apparently in an alcohol-induced stupor, forgot a few elementary things while attempting to satisfy his hunger. Like taking the eggs out of the carton, for starters.
Fire alarms went off in his building on Tartargaten in Bergen after the egg carton started burning up in the frying pan. Firefighters rushed to the scene around 4am and broke their way into the man's smoke-filled apartment.
Meanwhile, the man had fallen asleep during his late-night cooking session. He got a rude awakening.
"He'd forgotten to take the eggs out of the carton before frying them," fire brigade leader Harald Norvik of the Hordaland police district told newspaper Bergensavisen.
The firefighters weren't amused. They find themselves responding to alarms several times a year that are set off by drunks preparing late-night snacks.
"It can be life-threatening when people pass out while cooking," said Harald Skaalvik of the fire department.

Just wait for the new egg carton warning labels.
"Remove from carton before frying in pan. Failure to do so could create a hazard."

Why am I not surprised that alcohol was involved?

Line of the Day, in my opinion.

When I lived in a four-plex apartment in another town a few years back, there were college students in the apartment across the hall.
One night I was watching TV when the smoke alarm went off (if one was triggered all four apartments' alarms sounded).
I opened the front door to see oily smoke coming under the students' door, accompanied by a smell of burned food. I pounded on the door; no answer.
The girl in the apartment above mine had a key to their place; I got her to open the door. There they were: three guys passed-out drunk on the sofa and chairs while their pizza burned in the oven.
Luckily we didn't have the fire department over to the party.
The pizza was tossed out in the parking lot snow. I moved it to the verge as it could have punctured a tire.

I had never seen anyone passed out drunk and I don't think I really believed it could happen. Then I had to save a neighbor who was passed out drunk & naked in a pool of her own vomit while her spoiled-to-the-point-of-useless teenagers screamed and cried around her body. They thought she was dead. I had gone over only because they were screaming, thinking they were goofing off, at 9 pm.
Her husband was angry with me later because I called an the ambulance, but we found several empty pill bottles in the medicine cabinet, and it seemed the smart thing to do when we couldn't rouse her! The ambulance people walked her around until she was awake enough to tell them it was only gin. Okay, but if it hadn't been, she might've died in the interim. Such a surreal experience. I kept thinking, as neighbors poured in to the apartment, that it would be a real good idea to get a robe on her, but she and the EMTs both resisted.
