Macabre fashion statement
US Marines on exercise in Kuwait have been seen wearing some unusual accessories - skull masks.
US soldiers have been wearing a range of designer ski masks to protect their eyes from the desert sand.
The Grim Reaper skull mask was spotted alongside more trendy designs from the likes of Scott and Oakley.
Face masks are sometimes supplied as part of a soldier's kit, but many prefer to buy their own.
Civilian clothing, purchased privately, is often better made and more comfortable.
Soldiers in the British Army and Royal Marines also like to supplement their issued kit with other gear such as hiking boots.
In the Falklands, British military boots could not cope with the wet, marshy ground.
And in the Gulf, they fell apart in the desert heat.

Royal Marines guys - as in Brits...US Marines don't have "kit"
Military have been buying thier own gear since the Civil War.
Bought and carried my own .45 when the AF issued a (gasp) .38 (which in some areas passes for a personal weapon)... Still - pretty cool mask

Twenty years ago who'd a thunk the gi-renes would be our most progressive infantry force??!! I was in 20 years ago- I remember that the Corps was trying out all kinds of new things then. The Harrier had been recently adopted, the SAW, the M-300 and SMAW, the LCAC, the LAV, and I remember an experimental unit called "Reconaissance Engineers" being played with.
I feel as if the Corps is still in good hands these days. They still have the old traditions, and they're still constantly looking out for good ideas.
I have twice recently met members of the current crop. They're alert, competent and respectful. And they treat old-timers like older siblings.

I would give odds, that if YOU contacted the USMC office nearest you - and told them who YOU were...that you would have one within days!
Especially, if you told them you intended to wear in on FOX in support of the Corps....
I salute you and your service to our Republic...

Every Friday they graduate new crops here at MCRD SD.
Friday evenings you can spot the new Marines at local restaurants with their girlfriends, little brothers, and parents.
I always go over to their table and shake their hands and tell them how proud we are.
I really do that, and I suggest that all freepers do the same whenever they meet active duty kids home on leave. Just walk up, ask em what outfit they're with, and shake their hands and thank them.
It means a lot to them, you can tell.

Friday evenings you can spot the new Marines at local restaurants with their girlfriends, little brothers, and parents. I remember graduation day: I wanted to -
1.Get FAR away from MCRD
2. Wolf down the biggest steak I could find and
3. Sleep for several days straight.
I got the first two, and went home on leave to the room I had rented from a friend. The lights in my room clicked on at 0430. I exploded out of bed and was halfway dressed and out the door before I realised that I'd been had. :-)
As soon as I get to feeling better, and the weather warms up a bit, I might have to get on the bike for a trip down to see the graduation ceremony. I haven't been there in years.

The Friday Pass In Review is still something to see! Okay, I am becoming motivated for a motorcycle trip down from the Bay Area- maybe this spring. What time on a typical Friday should I plan to hit the Main Gate?
I will figure on staying for a day or two in SD- I'll need to find a hotel/motel on the beach and some really good food, too.

I don't find any masks on his site. Sort of hard to navigate it. Does he sell them?
