It was in trouble over Nevada! It was in trouble over California! It was in trouble from the minute of re-entry. It burned bright red and by Texas it came apart. 3000 degrees is one report........

All that is normal. Here's a video still from a reentry over Texas in 1999:

Only the "puffs" and claimed "lightning" would be abnormal.

If "breaking up" means breaking the shuttle into two or three big pieces, etc, then I think all will agree that event happened over TX.

It is unlikely that the Astronauts were able to talk calmly after the shuttle came apart.

Lens distortion on that so-called 'side shot' - that's been discredited on FR for TWO DAYS now. Don't know/have not seen a detailed Pix of the CA still camera shot ..

I am addressing a completely different issue and video shot in Nevada - you know, the state - Nevada? ... get with the program ... has ALL video taken across the country come to light yet?

That is exactly what they did, although I'd use a word a bit more respectful that "game." They knew shed ET insulation occurs, had measured its extent on numerous occasions, and were actively engaged in reducing or eliminating it (reduction via sanding hard outer layer of ET insulation off, in certain areas of ET, elimination by understanding mechanism that causes ET insulation to shed). NASA (I think) honestly believed, based on experience, that any damage due to ET insulation shed was only a matter of turnaround, and not any risk to mission integrity. They also reviewed information relating to this specific flight.

Yes, this is a new video that I just saw earlier today on tv. It is just as you describe it, wide zoomed out shot, shuttle moving from right to left with trail behind it, then "PUFF" a slight burst in the trail, and then the trail goes back to normal. The person that filmed this was north of the shuttle path as it traveled west to east.

My viewpoint was from the south and so it was moving left to right across the sky. I asked both my sons if they noticed anything falling off or a change in brightness. Both said no. We would have noticed that big "PUFF". I don't know if we would have noticed with our unaided eyes something more subtle like tiles falling off of the shuttle. We were just a Dad and two of his kids watching something real cool. It was hard to have to tell them a little later that morning what had happened.
