Carter's (and IMFPOTUS Clinton's) abandonment of the tradition in which former Presidents do not criticize their successors, especially on foreign policy, stand in sharp contrast to the behavior of former Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Reagan and G.H.W. Bush.
If all of this comes down as we anticipate, the Democrats will be finished for a generation -- it will put them in a position as marginal as they were after the Civil War and before the election of 1876.

So true. This is however, a rather sad development in our political system. Having functioning two-party system is what has made our country great. There was once a time when both Democrats and Republicans had the same vision for America, yet took different paths to that vision (I'm paraphasing a quote from JFK). Unfortunately that is no more. While Republicans in general celebrate individualism and true freedom, Democrats wish to morph America into another version of Europe, especially with their insistence of getting the U.N.'s permission to go to war with Iraq. It reminds me of an old schoolyard game I played as a girl called 'Mother May I?'.

If they are finished for a generation, another party would rise in their place, IMHO. And I can't imagine the DNC surviving. I saw this coming back during the Thompson Hearing on Chinagate. Americans are much more inclined now to believe what we've been saying. It's like peeling an onion. One level of denial is peeled away after another.
