Inconvenient Facts
Your January 24 edition hit a milestone in missing some inconvenient facts. No Blood for Oil should go on to say that no U.S. oil company can do business with Iraq by law. However, two opponents to any war, Russia and France, have multi-billion dollar oil contracts with Iraq. No wonder they support Mr. Edels opposition to war.
Two other opponents also have enormous economic interests in Iraq: China, who supplied Iraq with a military upgrade linking anti-aircraft batteries with a cutting edge fiber optic system, in addition to additional military hardware in the multi-million dollar range, and Germany, which has over 80 companies listed by the UN weapons inspectors as having provided expertise or material in nuclear, chemical, biological and military fields. No small wonder those four stalwart allies arent wishing Saddams farewell.
Mr. Michels War, what is it good for? editorial educates us that a growing number of senators, representatives and the public are against unilateral action on Iraq without the United Nations and allies support. Never mind that 90% of the opposition is from Democrats who had no such qualms against Clintons actions in Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq. Forget the clamor for UN resolutions then, because they didnt happen. Clintons actions bordered on that current scare word unilateral.
Fast forward to today, when we have the support of the following; Britain, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Slovakia, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Qatar, Albania, Israel, Australia, Japan and Jordan (an Iraq ally during the Gulf War). These are as of 1/30/03 and will grow. Hardly what Websters would define as unilateral.
The biggest litmus test of support I hear is for the wonderful United Nations to give its support. Never mind the 15-0 vote in favor or Res. 1441. Consider these two FACTS when wishing for UN support.
1. The current chairmanship of the UN Human Rights Commission is held by that paragon of human rights practitioners: LIBYA.
2. During the May 12 through June 27 session, the chairmanship of the UN Disarmament Conference is scheduled to be: IRAQ.
Thats right humble readers. I think its paramount that we Americans subordinate our foreign policy to an Organization that astonishingly brilliant, right?

Sometimes the local Robert Fisk wanna-be's make me so boiling mad I just have to respond, for whatever it's worth.

These farm teams of the NY Slimes are sometimes very quiet about their connections with the mother ship of slime and anti Americanism.
Great letter!

Think it'll get published?Yeah, they are gracious about letting me holler. They have even given me guest columnist status when my ravings get too long for a simple letter to the editor.

"rotating seats on the UN Security Council"...
where to place those rotating seats, and the corresponding mental image produced thereby, conjures up thoughts too nasty to share in this FRiendly FoRum ;-)
To: BOBTHENAILER
I fire off a letter to the editor several times a month to various papers from places I have lived. The biggest problem is keeping them under the word limit. Surprisingly I have a pretty good track record in getting published. Except in one paper who has never, in the past 3 years printed a single one of my letters.
To: BOBTHENAILER
Great letter, and ... even if it's not published, it's here on FR for record and reference.
It's bookmarked! Thank you.
