Peterson tackles rumors, reports
ADRIAN MENDOZA/THE BEE

At center, Los Angeles radio station KFI radio personality Ken Chiampou broadcasts live as he and other members of the media go to Scott Peterson's side gate after he arrives home Wednesday afternoon. Peterson later ordered the media off his property.

Peterson tackles rumors, reports

Scott Peterson conducted several televised interviews at his home on Wednesday, address-ing numerous allegations and rumors surrounding the investigation into the disappearance of his wife, Laci.

By 5 p.m., more than a dozen TV trucks had set up camp near the Petersons' house on Covena Avenue in Modesto's La Loma neighborhood.

Wednesday night, Peterson called police when other reporters -- hopeful for an interview -- followed him to his back gate and remained on his property after he told them to leave. Officers arrived, stayed 10 minutes and left, making no arrests.

Peterson declined to be interviewed by The Bee, saying that he was upset with two articles the newspaper had published.

One of the articles described Peterson at a New Year's Eve vigil for his wife, saying he was laughing and smiling a good deal of the time. He did not say what the other story was.

"With the feelings I have about the newspaper right now, I am not interested in talking," Peterson said by phone. "The articles need to have more with Laci in them and not be focused on me."

Laci Peterson's family reported her missing Christmas Eve. The 27-year-old is more than eight months pregnant with her first child.

Scott Peterson, 30, said he last saw his wife at 9:30 a.m. the day before Christmas when he left for a fishing trip and she prepared to go for a walk with their dog.

Police say they have not named Scott Peterson as a suspect, nor have they ruled him out of the investigation.

Wednesday began with the second part of Peterson's videotaped interview on ABC Television's "Good Morning America," with co-host

Diane Sawyer talking not only with Peterson but with his family.

In the interview, Peterson said:

Both he and Laci have $250,000 life insurance policies, taken out two years ago. He called untrue a report that he took out such a policy on his wife only last summer.

His wife may not have opened the drapes Christmas Eve morning because it was probably 40 degrees outside, and keeping the drapes closed helps keep the house warm. Family members and neighbors have said that Laci Peterson opened the drapes every day.

He routinely cuts his hands in his work on farms. Peterson, a fertilizer salesman, made the comment and showed his hands in response to reports that police had found blood in one of his and Laci's vehicles.

He loaded large umbrellas to take to his warehouse on Christmas Eve. A neighbor reportedly saw Peterson putting something into a vehicle that day.

During the interview, Peterson described his marriage as "glorious" even though he admitted to cheating on his pregnant wife. "We took care of each other very well," he said. "She was amazing. She is amazing."

Asked about the baby boy due within weeks, he responded: "That was, it's so hard."

At his home, Peterson sat down with several news outlets. He went through the interviews alone, without an attorney.

Speaking with Gloria Gomez of Sacramento TV station KOVR, Peterson explained why he said he told his wife about his affair with Amber Frey: "It was the right thing to do. And, as you know, when you're not doing the right thing, it eats you up. You know you feel sick to your stomach and you can't function. And you have a hard time, you know, looking at someone."

Throughout Wednesday, people drove and walked by the Peterson house, apparently to get a closer look.

"It's innocent until proven guilty in a court of law," said Elvira Varse, who lives a few streets away. "But he's guilty until he's proven innocent in this neighborhood."

Among the media throng was a pair of shock jocks from a Los Angeles radio station. When Peterson came home, one of them yelled into a megaphone: "Nobody believes your story."

Lyanne Melendez, a reporter with San Francisco radio station KGO, walked up to the shock jocks' radio van and told the DJs: "That's just bad journalism."

One of them responded: "We're not journalists. We're entertainers."

Bee staff photographer Adrian Mendoza contributed to this report.

It was a pretty dinky little boat by any standard, and one he certainly wouldn't have been bragging about. It very well could have had a specific purpose as you suggest. It would also be interesting to know exactly how many people knew about it since he had owned it for such a short period of time. His dad stated that he didn't know he owned it, and was somewhat surprised that he had purchased it in a phone interview he gave shortly after things started looking bad for Scott. It is an aluminum boat, not painted. 15 hp motor. Not a boat that I would be going far from shore in, especially in the SF bay. I would almost think it to be dangerous, and enough to get stopped by any Coast Guard or Fish & Game types if they saw him heading out in it from Berkely Marina, if for nothing else just to make sure he knew what he was doing and had ample safety equipment aboard. I don't know too much about those waters, so it may be considered normal, but a 14' boat w/ a 15 hp motor seems to me a little small to be taking on anything other than a small lake. It certainly wasn't built with sea conditions in mind. Basically it would be just a step up from bank fishing, and seemed to be well below Scott's tastes. But, hey, maybe he needed something in a pinch, and it fit the bill.

John was the one yelling at Scott, "Scott! What did you do with Laci, Scott?" and "No one believes any of your stories, Scott!" He did the same thing to Westerfield before little Danielle's body was found. So he's a little confrontational - it shows he has a pair and it makes for good radio.

And don't forget them making the "road trip" to Condidit's office in Modesto. Barged right in, and got the fuzz called on 'em, I believe.....good for them!

Hmmm, was it the NE that stated Scott called Amber and said, "my wife is dead."?

That was a freeper who said that.....and the family member did not want to contact LE as they didn't want to get involved or something.

Not sure tho if NE said it too.

Good. Easier to focus on this than impending war.

Btw, check this out from Websleuths. Gotta love it!

"I read a post from someone on another forum (can't remember where so if you are reading this I apologise and give you credit for it lol) about the alleged sighting by the trucker, they said maybe if this was true, the reason for SP to have Laci in the car next to him was so that he could sit her with her feet in the concrete and it would set by the time they got to the Marina. Just something I hadn't thought of before that could be plausible."

I'm sorry, but that post had me rollin'.

HUMM.. As a kid growing up around these we were always warned against going IN one to save anything animal or person.
But I have been on the bank of them MANY times and was not affected and workers walk the banks and attend the pumps and such unaffected.

LOL!

Nothing like taking stupid chances of being caught with your dead wife in the car with her feet in curing concrete.

No officer, she wasn't dead when we got in the car, must have been a reaction to the concrete; we were trying to break her habit of shoe shopping.

Thanks for the picture. Now I understand better :)
The manure pits I'm familiar with are different. They are more like a pond but at ground level. They just keep expanding as more manure is dumped into them and have no defined walls/sides around them.

Hey Rheo, what's up?
I think you were correct about there being no bankrupcy, there has been no verified listing. Also, about country club. My best friend used to date the owner's son of one of the bigger golf courses in Modesto. I just cannot imagine there being a $25,000 a year tab on it, no way. In fact I would in no way describe it as a country club...

Yeah, I caught that too. It just doesn't get that cold here, esp. during the day. Daytime was about 55, night was lower 40's. Her info is just worng on that point. Don't know anything about bait.

I found this -- one big paragraph -- here

Sturgeon are feed by using there noses and for this reason scent is very important. The old timers tales will tell you all kinds of stories about special stink baits and rotted baits for sturgeon fishing. While these types of baits may work well for catfish they do not work well for sturgeon fishing. Fresh is Best. While sturgeon are bottom feeders they are not garbage eaters and they are very tuned in on the native food sources. Upriver food sources include fresh water clams, lamprey eels, crawfish, small fish, smelt, salmon eggs, salmon carcasses, shad and so on. When there are large amounts of fresh natural food sources such as smelt or eels that migrate in large numbers the sturgeon become very sensitive to unnatural smells. For this reason when the smelt are running use fresh smelt without any scents added, if they aren't biting start adding some scent oils but always start out with the natural presentations first. When there isn't a large amount of fresh bait always use some added scents. Some examples of these are shrimp oil, sardine oil, anise oil, and any of the dozens of others that are available. The best way to use these is by injecting your bait with them. They also aid in masking the human odors. Sturgeon will change the scents that they like during the day so do be afraid to mix it up as far as which type of scent and bait combinations that you use. Probably the best all around sturgeon bait for upriver fish is smelt for keeper sized fish and fresh shad for the oversized fish. Followed by sand shrimp, squid and eel. combinations of smelt, squid, night crawlers also work well for the keeper fish. The oversized are extremely focused on fresh shad and while they will take a smelt they really want the fresh shad that are running at the same time as they are. Frozen shad will work but start your day out by catching some fresh stuff and you will see the difference. Saltwater sturgeon are a little different as far as the food sources go they feed on anchovies, clams, herring, sardines, squid, sand shrimp, mud shrimp and so on. When fishing for these estuary fish probably the best baits are sand shrimp, anchovies, small sardines. Use as fresh of bait as you can get and stay away from too many added scents. plan on bringing lots of bait and moving allot to get out of the sculpins (bullheads) as they absolutely love sand shrimp and anchovies and mud shrimp. in the deeper holes smelt can also be good.

Doesn't exculpate SP since he claims to have seen her the next day. Dubious he would have her kidnapped and the co-conspirator would let her go into a store and buy candy. How long would it take to drive from Modesto to Washington or fly if there was a private plane involved? Too far fetched for me but anything is possible-but certainly not probable.
