WRAL link apparenly no longer works -- or overloaded, maybe?Probably overloaded - It's an Ibsys.com feed; they can overload sometimes. I'm at work and can't check it from behind the firewall. I'll see if I can get an updated link from them.

Multiple injuries, no word yet on the cause.
Its up to ten taken to hospital, but they expect much more, how does a town of what 24,000 handle this 250-300 employees?

I'm glad they've got a good burn unit, but the survivors are going to go through hell. Recovering from burns is hideous and painful.

Just talked to my grand daughter at ECU. She could not see smoke but did say that she had been in Kinston just this weekend.

They are saying they could see the smoke 17 miles away.
Those pictures you are seeing are from the stations in Raleigh (5) and Durham (11).
Fire is RAGING...
Huge blast is all the people keep saying.

You could get an explosion from a natural gas leak or a chemical solvent leak. I would be surprised at a lack of detection preceeding the leak. I suppose coal dust or flour or something similar could also cause such an explosion (but do these exist in a pharmceutical plant?)
There's also the old standby: steam boiler. (I was in a building when the boiler went off. It took out one side of a gymnasium; no injuries.)

It's NOT the high school that was closest....maybe your friend's school? It was Parrott Academy, a private school, that was closest.

Ka BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
That one area of the building was cleared to the joists. I see lots of ambulances. Parked. Doesn't look good.

There's also the old standby: steam boiler. May not explain the fire, though.

I just heard the guy from that school say they had ten buildings damaged.
That is an awful lot of ambulances standing around, isn't it?

I suppose coal dust or flour or something similar could also cause such an explosion I wonder how much damage a disgruntled employee could do in a plant like that.

Any idea what materials at that plant could have caused such an explosion and major fire/black smoke?
