800 feet does sound awfully tall for water towers, but 80 sounds awfully short. The 800 figure has turned up on multiple news outlets.

Whether it's 60 or 100 who have not contacted their families (as the number seems disputed) there sure does seem to be a lot of people which have not been accounted for.

It's not hard to rack up $10,000 in fines. What time period does that cover, do you know?

I should point out that a gaylord is a corrugated box, not a queer Peer.

The syringes and IV tubing they described seemed pretty common place.
Most vaccines could be administered using pretty standard syringes and/or IV tubing of which there are several manufacturers.

If this was T, it seems they didn't pick a very good plant to hit.

I just talked with my pre-med grand daughter at UNC. She is working in the trauma unit at the hospital and said that helicopters had brought in 5 burn victims. A surgeon told her that at least one other had been taken to Duke.Other less serious vicims are at the hospital in Lenoir, she learned. She also said that when returning to her dorm, she had to wade through scads of TV crews gathered all around the hospital.

Under Section 313 of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act, releases of more than one pound of methyl ethyl ketone must be reported annually and entered into the national Toxic Release Inventory (TRI).

You know you can buy this stuff down at the hardware store in quart or gallon cans for use as paint solvent or degreasing solvent. All the MEK that is sold this way ends up released into the air or dumped on the ground. Wonder why everyone buying a quart (more than a pound) isn't warned to report it's use?

It was so amazing to see the firemen working this fire up on the support beams of this plant. The fires were burning all around them.

For anyone who, like me, has been tuned to this thread for the past few hours, AOL-Time Warner announced it lost $100 BILLION in 2002. And Ted Turner stepped down. We now return you to the thread.

There's a water tower in Kuwait that's over 600 feet (with a slightly shorter companion) -- but that apparently qualifies it as a global landmark. So I think you're right that there can't be 800 footers in Kinston, NC.

Your post reminded me of listening to a motorist calling in to a local TV station on the morning of the bombing of the Fred Murrrah building in Oklahoma. He was on his way to work in the building and heard (and saw) the explosion. He said he thought it must be a gas explosion, till he remembered there was no gas in that building. This was before the cause of the explosion was known.

Prayers for the safety of your colleagues.

Because the public would never put up with all the unrealistic b.s. regulations. Even if the average joe wanted to comply, he would never understand the rules.

"It was quite an explosion. It lasted for several seconds," he said. "It almost felt like an earthquake was taking place."

The factory is close to Global Transpark, a onetime commercial airstrip now used mainly by military aircraft. Christopher White, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration in Atlanta, said no aircraft were involved.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the plant was inspected in October, cited for numerous safety violations and fined about $10,000. State labor spokesman Juan Santos said the fine was reduced to $9,075 in an informal settlement Jan. 8.

They say the incident happened around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The TransPark is located at the Regional Jetport in Kinston. It was designed to be a manufacturing and transportation center allowing local companies to deliver products around the world.
