USO Canteen FReeper Style ~ Military Valentines Day Project Thread 2 ~ January 22 2003
68-69TonkinGulfYatchClub and FRiends of the Canteen

Posted on 01/22/2003 5:27:01 AM PST by 68-69TonkinGulfYachtClub

The original idea about organizing a Canteen project to mail packages
to the military belongs to MoJo2001
What started out with a simple FReep mail to several people quickly became a hit.
My 2 cents was to suggest that we get this project underway
in time to get these packages to the military by Valentines Day.
I think there are many different ways to do this.
Our goal is get get packages and/or cards, letters and e-mails to the military
so thay do not feel alone or forgotten on Valentines Day.

If you have not been to the USO Canteen Post Office recently there are new links and info there.
Info on what to include in Care Packages, snail mail postcards, new e-mail links, phone cards, etc.
Several FReepers have obtained snail mail addresses for active duty military.
Some of you have family and friends serving right now.
As you can tell this project can go in many different directions.
Some of you may want to "team" up with others to send one big package.
Others may want to do this by themselves.
Some may just want to e-mail or snail mail Valentines messages.
What is needed now is to post approved snail mail addresses of military bases and/or individuals.
I propose that each Wed between now and Valentines Day the thread be used to update info and ideas.
So to qoute a great patriot of 9/11 "LETS ROLL" and get this project underway!

Thanks to you and all the guys at the Canteen. That fire looks fabulous!

I'm going to call it a night. BabyGirl upgraded to contacts Monday and it takes her an extra half hour to get the darn things in!!

Naturally, that means I have to set my alarm clock 30 minutes earlier than usual.

God bless all the men and women who are stepping up to the plate for the rest of us in order to protect our freedoms.

Waited and waited, helo ops were cancelled due to strong winds
(20-30 mph) new storm front coming in.
Spent some time starting on tomorrows work load in Ops office.
ANYTIME on base is ALWAYS good time!
Thanks for the meal, I'm starved!

Bill Mauldin 1921 - 2003

This cartoon, created by Bill Mauldin and originally published in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Oct. 30, 1958, won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial cartooning in 1959. It depicts Soviet novelist Boris Pasternak saying to another gulag prisoner: 'I won the Nobel Prize for literature. What was your crime?' Mauldin, the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist who portrayed World War II reality laced with humor, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003 in Newport Beach, Calif. He was 81. This cartoon, created by Sergeant Bill Mauldin of United Feature Syndicate, Inc., was part in the series entitled, 'Up Front With Mauldin' for which he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1945 for distinguished service as a cartoonist. This particular cartoon is entitled, 'Fresh, spirited American troops, flushed with victory, are bringing in thousands of hungry, ragged, battle-weary prisoners.'

This cartoon featuring the weary, dogface GIs 'Willie and Joe,' was created by Sergeant Bill Mauldin of United Feature Syndicate, Inc., who as a young Army rifleman during World War II gave newspaper readers back home a sardonic, foxhole-level view of the front.

Howdy y'all!! I asked Nick, who's on the USS Constellation, to help me out tonight, since I'm soooo late. He offered to give me a ride and I took him up on it. LOL! One of you may have to pick me up off the ground once I get off this baby...wussy me has knees of jelly. I hadn't counted on breaking the sound barrier!

Tonk, that fire looks mighty inviting right now. aaaaaaaah! It's 22 degrees (and falling), windy, and snowing here. brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
