MONACO Jan. 22

An American male nurse convicted in the arson death of billionaire banker Edmond Safra escaped from prison overnight, police said Wednesday.

Ted Maher, originally of Auburn, Maine, was convicted of arson in a 1999 fire in Monaco that also killed one of Safra's other nurses, Vivian Torrente.

Maher apparently escaped overnight from the Monaco jail with another prisoner by sawing through the bars of their cell, French police said. Monaco authorities blocked off routes leading into the principality and launched a wide manhunt for the escapees.

Do you think France (who wouldn't extradite a murderer to the US) will extradite an arsonist?

France doesn't neccessarily have clean hands. I heard the other day about some officials having reservations about the war with Iraq.

Sure, he's an American. Makes all the difference in the world.

I don't know why this guy is news- he was a big item here during his trial for murder and then he ADMITTED he set the fire to make an impression on the guy, but 'didn't mean to kill him'.... yeah, OK great defense...

A 10 year sentence is light...

How funny.

Can we now look forward to a lot of crowing here on FR by the Maher-nuts, some of whom may have actually helped him escape?

Will we be treated to the scruptious details of how it all went down?

Will this be called the first "international FReep"?

Sorry, my B.S. detector just went off!

I don't believe you; you're going to have to prove this to me. Why would any country sign an extradition treaty that only allows its own citizens to be extradited to the U.S., but not the other way around?

That's just Barbra Streisand.

Good grief let's hope not. First I felt sympathy for the guy, but he started the darn fire for crying out loud. He's an arsonist and murderer by his own admission. V's wife.

FWIW, I don't think he should have been "Fried," because his intent wasn't to kill anyone. He wanted to stage the fire so he could be a "hero," and enhance his standing with his employer.

It got out of control, and the deaths resulted.

It was involuntary manslaughter, in American jurisprudence, and not "murder."

I don't see much reason for "crowing" here - he was recaptured relatively quickly.

From what I've heard they work both ways. Each nation exempts its own citizens from extradition.

I am so glad that they could recapture him before he could kill again.

You sound like an Arab talking about the USA.

This thread needs to be moved to the Smokey Backroom.

There's no debating a bunch of imbeciles who insist on buying this B.S. and C.F. from the Monacoan goons with attitudes like they have.

The man confessed. The only imbeciles are the ones who think that he didn't start the fire and murder two people.
