UN's Ritter faced sex rap

ALBANY - Former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter was secretly prosecuted in Albany County in 2001 after he was snared in an Internet sex sting operation, law enforcement sources told the Daily News.

Ritter, who lives in the Albany suburb of Delmar, is now a high-profile critic of President Bush's war preparations.

He was arrested by Colonie Police in June 2001 on a misdemeanor charge after he allegedly had a sexual discussion on the Internet with an undercover investigator he thought was an underage girl, law enforcement sources disclosed on condition of anonymity.

The case was sealed, and Colonie officials declined to release the arrest records, explaining the matter was adjourned in local court in contemplation of dismissal.

The Schenectady Daily Gazette reported yesterday that Albany District Attorney Paul Clyne fired veteran Assistant District Attorney Cynthia Preiser last week for failing to inform him of the case against Ritter.

Clyne said that as a "sensitive" case, it should have been brought to his attention.

Ritter, who has made frequent appearances on network television after speaking to the Iraq National Assembly last year, could not be reached for comment.

" ... an Asst DA threw away her career for this???"

She's probably thanking her lucky stars... she can earn more money as a public defender...

The ironic part is that people who choose to wink at his behavior and excuse it or rationalize it are the same ones who claim that Bush's stance against the Iraqi dictator is 'immoral.'

Very ironic

The case was dismissed for whatever reason... That means by the rule of law he was found innocent and should be judged so...

This was sealed.....which means a lawyer got the DA and a judge to do the deed.....wow!

Actually, the DA did NOT do the deed. He was kept in the dark. He just found out about the case and FIRED the ADA who was involved. He fired her last week and it still took a week for the local paper to report about it, and from there, to the article at the beginning of the thread.

From that article:

"The case was sealed, and Colonie officials declined to release the arrest records, explaining the matter was adjourned in local court in contemplation of dismissal.

The Schenectady Daily Gazette reported yesterday that Albany District Attorney Paul Clyne fired veteran Assistant District Attorney Cynthia Preiser last week for failing to inform him of the case against Ritter".

Wasn't a real crime in the first place.

It was a misdemeanor.... in other words, big deal... They must not have a huge caseload if the chief prosecutor wants to be informed about the charging decisions in relation to every misdemeanor... She's better off ...

I was posting a reply to you when you said this, Dog. I was clarifying that it was an ADA and not the DA who was involved and I see that you did get that.

Very interesting, indeed.

"Wasn't a real crime in the first place."

Why would you say that? He was arrested... You can't arrest people without citing some violation of criminal law...

Thanks. I think the Sunday shows have their agendas set in advance. When a story comes along as breaking news they are unable to weave it into questions for the guests.

LOL! Thanks for the chuckle! Whenever we want to know what the law says, we'll just ask our resident Diktator, who alone determines what is legal and what is illegal.

How does Mr. Ritter now earn his living? Is he still in the military or what? One would think that Mr. Ritter would have been savvy enough to recognize a potential Internet sting against him.

Also note the following, from Richard Butler's The Greatest Threat:
I returned to New York both educated and troubled by my experience in Moscow. The real shocker arrived, however, a few days later. I received reliable intelligence reports concerning Primakov's relationship with the Iraqi regime. The reports indicated that Primakov had been receiving personal payoffs from Iraq. Naturally, I was disturbed by this information, and I questioned my sources intensively. They insisted their facts were rock-solid. They could confirm the details of the payments, the times, the amounts, and the accounts to which they were sent.

Over the next eighteen months, I occasionally asked intelligence authorities if they were satisfied with the accuracy of these reports about Primakov. Could there be a mistake? I was informed repeatedly that the reports were verifiable and, a year later, was told that fresh evidence further confirmed the accusation.

From the article:

"Former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter was secretly prosecuted in Albany County in 2001 after he was snared in an Internet sex sting operation, law enforcement sources told the Daily News."

No one is secretly prosecuted... Whoever wrote this article is completely ill informed on the issue of criminal law...

Maybe I should amend my statement... only those that the Bush administration has deemed a threat to national security can be secretly prosecuted...

It's mind boggling that she threw away her career for this?

I would do a search of bank records to see if this ADA had a sudden influx of cash.

Well, there's a statute he violated, surely ... yet the victim was virtual:
He was arrested by Colonie Police in June 2001 on a misdemeanor charge after he allegedly had a sexual discussion on the Internet with an undercover investigator he thought was an underage girl, law enforcement sources disclosed on condition of anonymity.
I have a problem with that kind of thing ... maybe it's a regular practise, but as no real crime against a real genuine human being is committed, why it's silly. Even in stings with fake ho's and Johns. In REAL crime, in the process of carrying out a genuine crime, there's many a slip between the cup and the lip. "Virtual" crime makes no allowance for that.

Just because you have a problem with "that sort of thing" doesn't mean to be so...

It would be interesting to learn "who" gave the order to supress this case. I think it would come from some government level higher than the local level.
