The Democrats are in the process of shutting down the Senate to stop the GOP from chairing Senate hearings.

This is going to be two years of total war. Let's see if the media notices!

Unfortunately, the GOP isn't in the majority since it doesn't have 61 votes to end Dem filibusters. And that's going to be the requirement on every vote according to Daschle.

I wonder if we have reached the point where our Government can no longer function.

Unfortunately, with such a 50/50 polarized mix, it will take a lot to plow through the gridlock as the Senate has ingeniously built in safeguards to allow the minority to fudge up the majority. But perhaps this condition of governmental entropy is safest after all.

Big deal... funding... What matters more are other issues like how many judges can be voted on, who gets hearings and how fast, and whether or not the ABA has to report on each judge candidate...

It all depends on what and how you bring things to the floor.....say, like tacking organization to increased school funding.....Let the Dems filibuster that....

There's a section in the new volume of Caro's life of LBJ about what was done at the opening of the new Congress in 1957, when the liberals wanted to change the filibuster rule so that cloture became easier. If I understood Caro correctly, until the old rules -- possibly with changes -- were adopted, everything was to be decided under normal rules of parliamentary procedure, i.e., with simple majorities deciding everything, without the possiblity of a filibuster.

Anybody know anything about that?

By the way, if the RATs are able to filibuster the reorganization resolution and block Senate business, what happens until the filibuster ends? Do the committees function? Do staffs get paid? Is all business to be conducted -- in the absence of committees -- on the Senate floor?

C-SPAN Radio had a Senate Commerce Committee hearing this morning. How was it possible to hold this?

That is THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT PLUM the GOP won this past November.

Why in the name of all that is Holy would Hatch agree to this? He would simply be handing that wretch Leahy another club ($$) to beat over the heads of Bush's judiciary choices.

All that needs be done is everytime a Dem says we want to get this done because we need to work on Social Security, Jobs , econmy , etc. A Repub needs to ask for a question and say "I agree we need to get to work will you allow the vote now?"

Do it over and over and over repeat it till the cows come home. It will get on the news that way!
