NEW YORK (CNN) -- In his new book, "1421: The Year China Discovered America" (William Morrow), Gavin Menzies claims that a massive Chinese fleet of huge junks and support ships made a two-year circumnavigation of the globe, with extensive exploration of the Americas, nearly a century before Magellan and Columbus.

"
Did the Chinese discover America?"
Yes. The White Man is Evil.
Isnt that the spirit of this whole process?

They were sold the rights to this claim during the Crinton Administration

Yes. The White Man is Evil. where did that opinion come from?

The Piri Re'is map is a mystery. Most mysterious is how it appears in the article to support yet another odd-ball hypothesis.

So what happened to the Chinese colonists on the West Coast?? Killed by the white man too?

Big deal.
Leif Ericson and whole bunch of others "discovered" the New World, too.
It was Columbus who actually was able to:
(1) capitalize,
(2) exploit,
(3) take advantage of,
(4) make a profit
on the endeavor.

You left out: "The Chinese explorers, realizing the continent was inhabited by a peaceful race who lived in harmony with their natural surroundings, decided to return home and leave the continent in it's pristine condition."
To: fishtank
No he didn't, Columbus himself didn't get anything for his efforts. There weren't much to exploit in the west indies.

Very interesting article. I have often wondered why Redwood trees were found growing in only two places on Earth, coastal CA & China.
Hmmmm? It does make one think.

What I meant to say was that Columbus sparked the movement that made all the advancement possible.
The other "discoveries" fizzled out.

The answer is NO. There was no such thing as AMERICA at that time. Parts of the North and South America were not even grouped together into one continental mass as each is now. There were other races, civilizations that had visited the land before the Chinese.

"Very interesting article. I have often wondered why Redwood trees were found growing in only two places on Earth, coastal CA & China." I read an interesting article some time back. The article was titled "The Garden Of Eden" and described an area that was along the coast of Mississippi, part of coastal Louisiana, south Alabama, north Florida and south Georgia.
This study concluded that these areas remained essentially 'intact' and unchanged through-out all the Ice Ages for the last 28-35 million years and that the flora and fauna for all of North America was 'reseeded' from this area time and time again. Yes, including all the Redwoods, etc. on the west coast which was dessicated or under ice.
I guess the Chinese came to the west coast and got their Redwoods because originally they came from 'The Garden Of Eden.' (Huh?)

And what came of those previous visits?
They were kind of like our Apollo program to the moon: all flags and footprints, and no effort to establish a lasting presence or continuing transits.
