The Brits are either going to need to get meaner and uncivilized than hell or get killed....

As will we...

--------------------------

That's the idea. If they keep playing around and ten or fifteen thousand of them get killed, maybe it waill wake up a few people in high places over here as to reality. --although the principle one I have in mind seems brain dead.

"said to have been used in the assassination of Bulgarian exile Georgi Markov in London in 1978. Markov was attacked with a specially engineered weapon disguised as an umbrella which implanted a ricin-containing pellet into his body."

007 dressed as Mary Poppins?

I never heard of this one...

Not very promising as a wide-scale terrorism tool based on the factors mentioned in the synopsis, but very handy if you're contemplating assassination. This is the stuff the KGB used in that infamous umbrella-tip assassination of Georgi Markov in 1977.

Someone just now asking Rummy about this arrest in his press conference, but he says he's going to leave that for others to answer.

Per Sky News, the men are of north African origin.

They were arrested after an operation by the anti-terrorist branch in north and east London on Sunday.

"North African? So, is that Algerian? Libya? Morrocco???"

Or Egyption? Or Yemeni? Or Sudanese?

Ricin, just like "Love Potion Number 9," can be mixed up in your kitchen sink. Anybody can make it. No special equipment required. And, with reasonable care, it is "safe" to make, ie - little danger of the maker being injured. (Do a Google search.)

Ricin has bothered me for a long time. Since it's so simple to make, I'm very surprised it hasn't been used/found more often.

"...Bulgarian exile Georgi Markov in London..."

This assassination struck out in my mind as a most horrific way to die. THis is the stuff? WOW! He went to the hospital and they just couldn't figure out what was going on with him. He developed blood filled blisters on his eyes and puss filled scabs that blead all the time. He was in constant pain. The description of the agonizing way he did has always stuck out in my mind.

However, I think that the RICIN was also radioactive as well. I think that they took a small microscopic pellet of Ricin and made it radioactive. That is whaat caused the confusion.

SHUDDER!

Disregard my last, I missed the Skynews article somehow in the thread. For the fella that didn't know about the assassination using ricin and umbrella... watch the history channel more often! :) They had a whole show on that once, and by the way, it might have been "Bulgarian Secret Police" that carried it out, but they were under the USSR in those days, and in fact that method was created by the KGB themselves to use in assassinations plots. That is the only know assassination that HAS occurred using that method to my knowledge.

I'm not sure whether or not ricin can be used in another modes, or whether it must be given subcuteanously or not. If it can be ingested directly then posioning water would be a 'viable alternative'.

"If terrorists can get ahold of an airport in britain, enough so that they can smuggle weapons onto the passenger compartment on a major airliner, they can land in a US city and tactically have the upper hand. (the only people in airports with guns are law enforcement, so there are plenty of defenseless targets once that plane lands)."

As one who does not own or carry a gun, I still believe I can defend myself against a person with a weapon, even a gun. True, the odds decrease when you are unarmed and your opponent is armed, but you can fight back and win.

That said, I share your grave concern over current events.

This is blatant anti Arab and anti-Islamic propaganda....the five guys are chefs and they were experimenting with a new recipe for cous-cous.....they love England, and hope to franchise thousands of cous-cous shops all over the country, to wean Brits from their unhealthy love of all things fried....

This assassination was carried out in broad daylight in a public place.

I remember the "means" vividly, but can't recall exactly which branch of the KGB pulled it off.

Let's hope and pray water is not a good means of deployment.

Wasn't there some suspicion that Labour politician Hugh Gaitskell was poisoned with ricin? Something about drinking a cup of tea at the Soviet Embassy in London, as I recall. His place as leader of the party was taken by Harold Wilson, who some suspected was a Soviet agent.
