Great WWII Movies.
Jan, 05 2002 | Justice

My wife and I just finished "Band of Brothers" and "Guns of Navarone". Two WWII movies which we both enjoyed very much. Please post any recommendations that any of you have for more movies of the same ilk. Many thanks!

Oh, and one other, "The Devil's Brigade". Not the most accurate account of the combination of Canadian and American soldiers that formed the 1st Special Service Force, but at least it shows that there was an SF before John Wayne.

Interesting take on Vietnam..."A Bright Shining Lie" with Bill Paxton.

Concerns the early years of Vietnam.

"Bridge On The River Kwai" is a good movie but full of historical and factuak errors.

One of the best Marine Movies is Battle Cry. I read an article the other day saying the movie " 12 Oclock High" was probably the best movie ever made of the 8th Air Forch.

A Band of Brothers is a lot better in the book, I suppose there was just too much going on to put in a movie.

"Lawrence of Arabia"

T.E. Lawrence whipped the Arabs into a homo-erotic frenzy and whipped the Turks during World War I.

I'll go out on a big limb and say Casablanca.

"my short list is- Battleground, this is a great flick about guys in the battle of the Bulge..."

Battleground, 101st Airborne troops trapped in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge.

Starred Van Johnson and John Hodiak, won two Oscars (1950) and was nominated for four others.

Certainly one of the top war films of all time.

Enemy at the Gates (2001) starring Joseph Fiennes and Jude Law. Big budget European movie about Soviet snipers at the Battle of Stalingrad. Ed Harris played the Nazi sniper who tries to flush out his Soviet counterpart. This is available for rental at the video stores.

That was a great film.

In a related point, as we speak, there is a WWII In Color documentary on the P-47 Jug - as involved in the air war over Germany.

Thanks for the heads-up... that WWII in Color stuff is all good.

Check out this P-47 pilot's journals

I agree that the book "Band of Brothers" is better than the movie, but most of the time books are.

Hey, what was the one with John Wayne, Dana Andrews, Jimmy Stewart, Telly Sevalas, Gina Lollobrigida, Alan Deloin, Gabby Hayes, Brigitte Bardot, Fabian, Frankie Avalon, Horst Buchholz, Yves Montand, Barabara Stanwyck, Jayne Mansfield, Stewart Granger, Sidney Poitier, with the theme song written by Henry Mancini and sung by Johnny Mathis? Yeah, that's the one! Great, wasn't it?! I wish they had had Paul Newman and Rod Steiiger in it too!

Hanoi Hilton-Michael Moriarty

Hamburger Hill-The most realistic Viet Nam war movie. The other trash (Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now) can't compare, if real Viet Nam battles interest you.

"It was a pretty grim movie and showed that the German Navy was the least nazi-fied of their military branches."

I agree Das Boot was a great, dark movie. Not sure I agree with the quote above. From what I've read, a good many of the U-Boat commanders were pretty fanatic Nazis.
