This one has always puzzled me?

You have to believe that YOUR form of control over other people is vital to preserve the very fabric of society whilst the OTHER PARTY'S form is nothing short of the worst kind of tyranny.

You have to believe that whatever is done by a politician with YOUR letter after his or her name is great, selfless and wonderful, yet if the identical thing is done by the OTHER party it is evil, cynical and selfish in nature.

(Oops... these apply to BOTH halves of the ruling party. Sorry! {not})

I've had liberals ask me how come I'm pro-life but support the death penalty. Simple answer, I don't believe in executing children, especially if they haven't committed a crime, but I'm flexable, if unborn children go on a killing spree, maybe I'll re think it.

Margaret Sanger founded Planned Parenthood quite openly as an expression of her support for Eugenics, that is use of abortion as a tool for unnatural selection. The fact that their "clinics" are usually to be found in black neighborhoods is no coincidence.

But remember the "good-guy" Republicans are just no match for the Democrats, who will, in the words of "good-guy" Republican Thomas E. Dewey "promise anything to anybody to get a vote." The GOP, even when its in the majority, spends most of its time catering to the Democrat minority. Remember how Orrin G. Hatch "begged" AR Bill on national television to "come clean" about Monica. No one ever looked weaker than Orrin G. Hatch in that instance.

Yes, and Trent Lott went to that memorial in good faith, and look how the Democrats treated him. Little did Trent know that his own "loyal" Republicans would finish him off six weeks later! Trent just never learned that he had to do a little more than conciliate the Democrats to stay in "power."

For starters, Harry Browne's carping post 9/11. I had (and still have) many reservations about what I've called "Fortress America" in the post-9/11 world. We certainly have done some strange and creative things with the interpretation of Constitutional freedoms, some rightly, some wrongly. I fully expected and supported Browne's (and the LP's) statements in that direction.

But when Browne began to speak of capitulation in the face of the attacks, and to talk about curtailing the War on Terror, I had to give pause. After hearing enough of it, I began to get angry. Not long after, the "blue" candiate out in Montana popped up on television. Then came the spitting incident in California.

On top of it all, came the local LP's constant whining and interloping in races here; to the point of potentially sending some seats over to the Democrats, had their efforts not been in vain.

When all of things came together, the answer - at least to me - became more clear. It was obvious that the LP was not the place for me, and was not the place where I could effectively bring conservatism more solidly into the mainstream of middle class black America. There are others who feel otherwise, Larry Elder most prominent among them. I just can't do it.

The LP appears, to me, to be as far out on the fringe as the LaRouches and the Greens and the Perots and some of the other fringe groups. I'm sure there are some here who might be able to present some compelling arguments. And while I certainly support many libertarian (little 'L') principles, nothing I've seen of late has been compelling enough to make me change my mind.

Thanks for the answer. If I may, I would like to point out a few things. Before I do, let me say that I have problems with them too, but they are different from yours in some cases.

Harry Browne is not the LP. And now he is essentially out of the picture. So going forward, I don't concider that a problem even though I had some problems with some of what he said.

Two, the LP exists to elect it's own and defeat those with whom it doesn't agree, so the fact that they defeat Republicans seems to ring hollow for me.

Third, if you have a problem with a specific candidate's postitions, you should address them, not the color of his skin, even if that color is blue.

Fourth, if we are going to judge a party poorly because of a candidate who they repudiated and kicked out of the party we would need to suggest what else they could have done. Also, candidates of other parties should be judged by the same standard, and their parties should be concidered fringe because of it as well, in order to be consistent. Duke etc come to mind.

And last, to be fringe, you have to have fringe ideas, which ones are they that make them fringe in your opinion?

Just as an aside, I'm not suggesting you join the LP or anything of that sort. I'm just pointing out what I believe are some of the problems with perceptions, which is why I asked the question.
