Obviously, Murray never heard of America's Foreign Aid program! It's strange that a Socialist never heard of a major Socialist program!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if she is concerned with State Department expenditures and budgeting.... Sounds like a veiled agenda for foreign aid, rather than a true interest in "knowing thy enemy."

Let's see Patty Murray give that same speech to the families of the people killed at the WTC. How much "guts" does Patty Murray have.

Instead she opts for students who have little no frame of reference, and generally are too polite or intimidated to mount a counter argument. Just like the editorial staff enablers who wrote this propaganda we are commenting on. The is no immediate counter argument made. Let any of them hiding under the "editorial staff" cover come on FreeRepublic and discuss their views. That's how they get away with this propaganda.

Wow. I always thought you had to be a male to get a Lewinsky but the Post-Intelligencer staff seems to have done one to a woman with this suck up piece.

So praising OBL now requires 'guts'. Does that apply to Trent Lott praising Dixiecrats?

Generally, Murray was right about bin Laden's activities in poverty-stricken Muslim regions. He has built roads in Afghanistan and schools in Pakistan, for instance. One news report refers to a Pentagon fact sheet that mentioned bin Laden importing heavy equipment used in hospital construction, which seems to back up Murray's reference to health care facilities. While her statement about bin Laden providing day care facilities makes little sense, there is apparently a long-standing rumor that he built an orphanage.

This has to be the lamest defense ever offered in a major publication.

Could somebody help validate this assertion? Is there specific heavy equipment used just, or primarily, for hospital construction and no other kind of construction?

I thought the same thing as it read it.

One news report [no doubt the one article yielded in a Lexus-Nexus search] refers to a Pentagon fact sheet that mentioned bin Laden importing heavy equipment used in hospital construction, which seems to back up Murray's reference to health care facilities. While her statement about bin Laden providing day care facilities makes little sense, there is apparently a long-standing rumor that he built an orphanage.

Flimsy, at best.

Sen. Patty Murray had the guts to raise an important question about the popularity of Osama bin Laden in some parts of the world....Murray's remarks last week to an honors class at a Vancouver high school deserve good marks for tackling that tough assignment, and the ensuing debate across the state and even the nation fits American tradition. Generally, Murray was right about bin Laden's activities in poverty-stricken Muslim regions. He has built roads in Afghanistan and schools in Pakistan, for instance.

I wonder if, in 1942, the Seattle P-I would have written the following:

"Sen. John Crankcase had the guts to raise an important question about the popularity of Adolf Hitler in some parts of the world... Crankcase's remarks last week to an honors class at a Vancouver high school deserve good marks for tackling that tough assignment, and the ensuing debate across the state and even the nation fits American tradition. Generally, Crankcase was right about Hitler's activities in economically devastated post-WWI Germany. He has built roads, schools, hospitals and rebuilt Germany's industrial base, for instance."

Just curious about how even handed they are in their adulation of butchers and tyrants...

Congratulations Seattle PI! You have just defended the indefensible. I re-read your article just to try to glean any true justification for support of this pathetic Senator. There is none.

Senator Murray is a useful idiot or a traitor.

You twisted the idiot view to imply that she is some cutting edge intellectual on the forefront of political debate. Survey says? Errrrrrrhhh! Your wrong; she is an idiot and you are wrong.

You glossed over the traitor view with a mild attack on the USA. Blame America first! Right? I say no. The USA is a major, if not the biggest, giver of foreign aid in the world. How could a US Senator not know this? How can you defend the mass murderer Osama Bin Laden.

You buy ink by the barrel, but I can get electrons to make emails and websites by the gazillions for free!

The following is my email to this bird cage liner.

It doesn't take guts to praise our counties greatest enemy in front of some high school students, let her make that stupid anti-American speech to the families of the victims of 911, or maybe to the survivors of the men killed in Afghanistan.

I think if your newspaper wants to back her up you should provide proof of all these schools, hospitals, and day care centers that Bin Laden has built. Make sure you interview all the girls that went to his schools and the women who took advantage of the day care centers as they worked at their meaningful jobs.

Big media covering for their own kind doesn't get more blatant than this. Simply an ignoble piece of trash.

I've yet to hear the defense of bin Laden's "day-care centers" - presumably for all those Moslem mothers who maintain careers outside the home.

Shame on the Seattle PI. Shame.

It's a great letter. They'll probably reject it because you aren't a Seattle resident! That's the printing policy line they usually pull out when it's convenient. However, if Bill and Melinda Gates (of Medina, WA) wrote a Murray-favorable letter, they'll make an exception to their printing policy!

Dear Editors, Seattle Post-Intelligencer:

It seemed impossible but in your editorial justifying Senator Patty Murray's idiotic remarks you managed to demonstrate ignorance that surpasses even hers. Do you folks up there drink a lot?
