PASCAGOULA, Miss. - Sen. Trent Lott (news, bio, voting record), in his first public remarks since resigning as Senate Republican leader, said Sunday that had fallen into a "trap" set by his political enemies and had "only myself to blame."
|
Lott became the focus of a raging controversy for his remarks praising Strom Thurmond's 1948 segregationist run for president.
Asked in an interview with The Associated Press whether he was disappointed in a lack of support from President Bush (news - web sites) in keeping his post, Lott said:
"I don't think there's any use in trying to say I'm disappointed in anybody or anything. An inappropriate remark brought this down on my head."
However, he said there were those who had been gunning for his resignation.
"There are some people in Washington who have been trying to nail me for a long time," Lott said. "When you're from Mississippi and you're a conservative and you're a Christian, there are a lot of people that don't like that. I fell into their trap and so I have only myself to blame."

BOOK CHARGES: HILLARY CALLED AIDE JEW BA**ARD |
DRUDGE REPORT FRIDAY JULY 14, 2000 12:00:00 ET **World Exclusive** **Contains Graphic Description** Hillary Clinton has angered Jewish voters in New York and nationally with her controversial support of a Palestinian State, and her startling embrace of Yasser Arafat s wife. Questions remain, and the debate intensifies, as to whether she can win the crucial Jewish vote in New York as she wages a neck-and-neck battle with Congressman Rick Lazio, who has made the Jewish question a campaign issue. Now, as the race comes down to the wire, a new book is set to explore the first lady s feelings about Jews and anti-Semitic sentiments held by certain Rodham family members. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0060193921/drudgereport>Biographer Jerry Oppenheimer s new book STATE OF A UNION: INSIDE THE COMPLEX MARRIAGE OF BILL AND HILLARY CLINTON will not be released by HARPERCOLLINS until Tuesday, but the DRUDGE REPORT can reveal: In one particularly shocking passage in the book, Oppenheimer quotes a campaign official who describes an angry attack by Hillary in which she screams at him, "You fu**ing Jew ba**ard!" |
My apologies for the language, even though I did ** it out. |
There will come a time, in the not too distant future, when those Christian conservatives will long for the days of Trent Lott.
Let's see if Frist does anything about PBA.
Losing Lott as Majority Leader is a good thing. He has spent way to long catering to Democrats in such as protecting clinton, deliberately trying to make the House managers in impeachment look like fools, undercutting military discipline and tradition and offering to share power with Democrats when there would never be any reciprocation...or respect for that matter. It looks like Frist is the guy to replace Lott. With luck Frist won't be so nonsensical as has been Lott.
The humor may be the fact that the Democrats will rue the day they set out to destroy the Republicans by destroying Lott. They destroyed the one Republican in the Senate that insisted on carrying their water.
Talking outside his home here, Lott again said his comments at Sen. Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party were not malicious and he repeated his pledge to turn the experience into positive action as he finishes his term in the Senate.
"I feel very strongly about my faith. God has put this burden on me, I believe he'll show me a way to turn it into a good," Lott said.
He also said he regretted the comments reflecting poorly on his home state, which has tried for years to overcome a bleak record on race relations.
Daschle walked all over Lott, just like George Mitchell did to Bob Dole.
In my mind it would be the day "Bush and his allies the democrats set out to destroy Lott"....
Well, yeah. I'm one of them. Buh-bye, you incompetent, spineless, craven, weak doofus.
Wait . . . . . I'm in the good Washington, not the evil one. Does that still count?
