StopDemocrats.com is asking for Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) to Step Aside.
The petition reads:
Recent comments by Senator Trent Lott (R-MS) involving Senator Strom Thurmond's 1948 presidential candidacy supporting segregation have created a controversy that may force the Senator to step aside as leader of the Senate Republicans. This petition asks that the same standards be applied to Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) ,who is the current President pro tempore of the US Senate, and demands that he resign from any leadership post in the 108th Congress for saying the following racist comments on National television 21 months ago. "My old mom told me, 'Robert, you can't go to heaven if you hate anybody.' We practice that," the senator recalled. "There are white niggers. I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time-I'm going to use that word."
America does not need to have a Senator like Robert Byrd as a leader in the US Senate or even as the Ranking member of a committee.

Thanks for the ping, however I will not sign this petition... I don't think it is helpfull to point fingers at others to take (well deserved) heat off yourself..
Do I think Lott is racist? No. Do I think his remarks were not well thought out before they were made? Absolutely.
When an person holds a such an honorable position in our government they must be VERY careful about what they say.. Simply because "bad speeches" can't be unspoken... I think it would reflect great credit on the Republican Party to ask Sen. Lott to step down from his Leadership position. Not because he is a racist but simply because it brings DOUBT in the mind of some Americans and that alone is enough IMHO.. we have plenty of great leaders in the Senate that would not have this baggage. If Republicans allow Sen. Lott to continue to be Majority Leader it WILL interfere with our ability to get our legislative agenda passed.

I ask Sen. Lott to step down for the good of the party, and not to pull a Clinton... Clinton was so intent on making HIMSELF look good that he forgot what PUBLIC selfless-service was all about...

I like the petition. I think it's always a good idea to point out Democrat hipocrisy. I didn't sign it to take heat off myself, or the Republican Party. President Bush already did that when he denounced Lott's comment. I signed it to put some heat on the Rats!
