Doesn't work. The current Mississippi gov. is a 4-term Democrat, so the scenario goes like this: Lott steps down, the gov. appoints a Democrat to fill his seat, the Senate is now 50/50 (Jeffords being effectively a Democrat), the hunt to find another Republican turncoat or fixable special election kicks into high gear, and Lott winds up campaigning as "The Guy Who Cost The Republicans The Senate," with ZERO support from the party or GW.

I don't think Lott's comments were racist, just incedibly stupid.

Oh, you know what he meant when he said them? You're buying the liberal spin.

I think he meant that we wouldn't have had all the corruption of the Clinton years. Either way it would upset the liberals.

Larry Sabato (professor University of Virginia) reported that if Lott were to resign from the senate before the end of December, the Demo replacement (assumed per Demo Governor of Mississippi) would only have a 90 day term before a special election would take place. If the resignation comes after January 1, Lott's replacement would have a 1 year term.

Why wasn't this circulated in the press before? Why didn't the GOP senate press a meeting ASAP instead of waiting 20 days to January 6th?

Lott has become a one-man wrecking crew as far as the GOP Congress is concerned. What a pathetic loser -- almost as bad as Algore. As a matter of fact, Gore is helping Lott by taking away some of the spotlight.

Anyone who interpreted Lott's comments at the party to be racist, is themselves a racist. Period.

This is a joke, right?

Lott quits as majority leader effective immediately, and moves to the back bench. He then runs for governor (election is in Nov. of 2003). Upon winning, he resigns his senate seat and appoints Barbour as his replacement.

Oh please. I guess Colin Powell and Condi Rice are racists then.

If they hunted for and found racism in his comment, the yes, they are.

You might be right in your assessment of Santorum....I think he could do the job effectively, and he's rumored to want it......but the point of my comment was, given the four possible choices...would the GOP avoid picking another southerner.....that's why I think it'll be Santorum..

How do you think southerners would react to the fact that the "new" majority leader can not be from the south? Do you think the votes can be made up in Boston with "moderates" who now embrace the GOP?

Mock use of Ebonics is racist.

LOL! I made a mistake in grammar. I'll explain what I meant if you find it necessary.

Hope it's over soon, so we can actually go back to preparing to govern as the majority party.

We're not going to be the majority party, no matter what Lott told Newsweek.

There's too much of this talk about him leaving the Senate for me to doubt that that is, in fact, what he will do.

Nobody is forcing Lott to dance. He chose to degrade himself all by his lonesome. It amazes me that conservatives who once called him Traitor Lott are now defending him.

Maybe I'm thick, but, when I read that, I didn't think Lower55 was making mock use of Ebonics (to tell the truth, I didn't even notice the error.) Couldn't the assumption that a grammatical mistake is intended to be a mock use of Ebonics itself be viewed as racist?

Well, I guess he doesn't mind being forever known as the lowest of scumbuckets then.

I guess that will prove his supporters admission, and his detractors contention, that he really is stupid.

I'm not sure that any of this is going to change anything. It might have worked if they put Lott in the center of a circle and everyone had a chance to slap him, spit on him, and generally beat him about the head. But to really get even with 'the man'....he would have to offer himself up for a hanging.

It is the fault of 'rabid conservatives' that Trent Lott is dancing to the race hustlers tune?...LOL...that's ridiculous on the face of it, sinkspur.

No it's not. He's not going to step down, so he's trying to save himself.

You're going to have to force him out, and that usually is not a pretty thing to watch.
