That's not really true. Look at how Bush handled the attempts to paint him racist......

"Didn't he learn from the Clinton machine? You deny responsibilty and then say you have already addressed the issue, refusing to discuss it again."

Even if he decides to stop discussing it now, he might be too late.

What about all the white mississippians who voted for Lott because of his record against affirmative action. How do they feel tonight?

You're starting another misstatement all over again.

He said he supports AA across the board. Do you even know what that means??

Last monday I was debating with anyone and everyone who thought Trent Lott should step down as the ML, After a week of seeing Trent Lott abandoning all of the principles he has stood for since becoming a Senator. IMHO there is no shame in condemning "Affirmative Action" and I will debate any CBC member who thinks "Affirmative Action" and the lowering of the bar that it requires, will ever help equal the playing field.

Rewarding moderation is a recipe for failure and any reasonable minded person should agree that lowering the bar by implimenting a policy that requires anyone to ignore the accomplishments of one person because of the skin color of another is a racist policy and it should never be supported. This country MUST continue the practice of rewarding excellence, otherwise, what's the use in being the best? The pay is the same!

"no one can lay a glove on him"

Want to bet? You will all be saying the same thing about him that you are about Trent Lott when Carville gets finsihed with him.

he will come out for affirmative action"absolutely

Of course he went on to say that he believed in affirmative action and that he hired some blacks for his staff. Whoopie, Im sure that went over great. Last I heard something like one or two percent of his staff was black.

another quote from tonight.

a Mississippi Republican, then decried some of the leadership in the South. "There has been immoral leadership in my part of the country for a long time."

Asked by BET anchor Ed Gordon whether he had been a part of that leadership, he said, "Yes, I can't deny that. And I, you know, believe I have changed and I am trying to do a better job.

"But, yes, I am a part of the region and the history that has not always done what it was supposed to have done."

"I'm for affirmative action and I've practiced it. I've had African Americans on my staff and other minorities, but particularly African Americans, since the mid-1970s."

Oh, my god, what an idiot! Trent Lott just told the whole world that he hired people who were not good enough on their own to work for him. Were I a black member of his staff, I would quit tonight!

He is truly a stupid, stupid man.

I think Lott was trying to explain that if he hired strictly on merit, his staff would be all white. That is the only explanation that makes any sense given that he has one black employee.

That is how I interpreted that quote, as well.

Let's keep this conversation where it belongs — on power and politics:

• Lott must be removed as Majority Leader immediately — unless he threatens to leave the Senate...
• ...in that case, he must remain as Majority Leader.
• Jim Jefferds must return to the GOP to boost a fragile majority...
• ...even if he wants to chair a committee.
• Stop talking about race — even if you know what you're talking about.
• Give the Democrats time to overplay their hand; they will do it.
• It looks like Lott has done what the whole Democrat Party failed to do this election cycle...
• ...he energized the Black base — against the GOP.

Last I heard something like one or two percent of his staff was black.

1 for 65 now. A mail room worker, 5 for 163 from the period 1972 through 1988 when his opponent tried to embarass him with it.

If Lott is only going to have 1 black on his staff, why not a community outreach guy? Just one office worker in Mississippi, who attends functions, conveys Lott's message, not just a mail sorter. Lott's decision of course.

I believe Lott would SUPPORT reparations, if it meant that he could keep his job. I really do.

Is this something new???

I would agree that he energized many Freepers to side with the Dems.

"Where has the good faith been shown by the Dems, the media and his ersatz allies...poor Lott is finding out he is a lonley man and for that, he ought to now look out for number 1."

I think we should assume that he will.

"If he gives all the finger, good for him."

I won't be at all surprised if he does. He's proved that he's human.

What will all this then look like in retrospect? Crazy!

dogbyte12: "He is actively trying to bribe blacks into letting him stay, still believing he is a racist, but allowing him to shower them with goodies to overlook their thoughts about him. Truly disgusting"

You: "You should get a hold of your bad self. Blacks are not a monolith that can be bribed en masse."

The problem is that Lott appears to be actively TRYING to do just that: bribe the black community.
