As Delaware's indoor smoking ban enters its third week, most establishments appear to be observing the law - even though opposition is growing among some tavern and restaurant owners who complain they are losing business.

People were smoking in only two of 33 bars and restaurants visited by News Journal reporters last week. Many tavern owners and patrons said they are obeying the law while organizing to try to overturn or amend it when the General Assembly returns in January. Several owners said they think they have lost 20 percent to 50 percent of their business since the ban went into effect on Nov. 27.

And they faced no concerted, organized opposition from smokers or from the business community, legislators and observers said

Legislators and observers lied - but to be more truthful - the News Journal lied.

I went balistic when that article first appeared and I go just as balistic now.

Iknow that, just like me you have been experiencing puter problems - I'm hoping to have mine solved around the same time as yours are. Then we're going to talk - I've got a bunch of stuff where I might need your help - especially your HTML skills!!!! (big wink)

It's going to be an interesting summer for Delaware.

I don't think it's going to last that long - for lots of reasons including the ones you list.

I used to smoke; gave it up about 20 years ago. But I believe in freedom and self-determination; if the smoke gets too heavy for me in a certain place, I choose not to got there.

Why is that so hard for people to comprehend? You don't like smoke; there are of places that are smoke free. There's no need to legislate EVERYONE to be smoke free.

Heston later said he wished that he would never have supported that meathead proposition because he could see where it was going.

I am disappointed, I would have assumed that Heston could have seen through the smokescreen from day one.

Well, Heston has always hated smoking. But so did Hitler and many others. It's how you handle the situation that counts.

Why is that so hard for people to comprehend?

Because it is not about the so called dangers of second hand smoke it is people are enjoying themselves and that burns the antismoking neo-purtan health Nazis who basically live miserable lives and want everybody else to also.

From Forces.org

"There is only one honest impulse at the bottom of Puritanism, and that is the impulse to punish the man with a superior capacity for happiness." H.L. Mencken

I bet when NYC suffers a similar fate as Delaware, Baffoonberg will blame it on the poor economy

They all use the same lame excuse, first it was 9-11, then it was downturn in the economy, someone please tell me why our house in one year went from $139.000 to $174.000 in a depressed economy, these anti's are nuts.

Hi again, fearless leader.
I assume you would know, if anyone does...

Has the suggestion been floated to go all out to demand the banning of tobacco?
I mean demonstrations, bumper stickers, letters to state and national legislatures, the whole nine yards.

Just to see how the niconazis react to the sudden influx of rabid support?
And the realization that the gravy train is about to be permanently derailed...?

We can call the legislation The Unemployment Act for Controlling Twits

HEHEH, I may be a Canuck, but I at least got you humor.

The government is trying to privatize booze stores, although they are making plenty of money on it.

Smokes are the same as they are in a lot of states, and yes the black market is doing very well thank you, you can buy 200 smokes in a plastic bag for $20, was offered loose tobacco for a good price, guess who the guys partner was....... a politician. :-}}}}}

But still, Heston with his own issue, should have been able to see what a slipery slope this is.

Remember, Heston announced awhile ago that he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. It's sad. But he won't have the same convictions we are used to seeing.

Yes, that is so sad, he might want to take up smoking, it has been said tobacco can prevent or slow down the progression of that illness.

People were smoking in only two of 33 bars and restaurants visited by News Journal reporters last week...one bar in Wilmington is deliberately defying the ban by allowing its patrons to smoke and paying the hundred dollar or so fine daily - they'll probably bring in enough extra customers to cover the fines, but doubtless the state will eventually come up with some additional charges such as conspiracy to finally put them under - got to admire their gumption though.......
