If what Lott said is so despicable and unforgivable, Karl ought to be calling for Lott to resign from the Senate completely. The fact that he is not proves that this whole incident has nothing to do with what Lott said and everything to do with getting him out of leadership of the GOP Senators.

You are a sleaze-bag, Karl, to gin up bogus "RACIST!!! RACIST!!! RACIST!!!" slander from whole cloth. Shame on you. If you want Lott out, be forthright about it instead of using Jesse Jackson's sleazy tactics.

You don't think the standards ought to be higher for national party leadership than for just a garden variety Senator?

Since when is it the White House's business who the senators elect to lead them?

Lott may not be a racist. He may have changed his mind on segregation, but he did, DOCUMENTED FACT, support segregation in his earlier years. Frankly I don't care any longer.

If he remains, all legislation will be viewed through the "Race" prism in the future, and Bush will be hit with questions like these:

Excuse me, Mr. President - Your proposal to eliminate the double taxation of dividends will have virtually no stimulative effect on african american wage earners, is this an example of the racially inclusive nature of the republican party?

Excuse me, Mr. President - Since our armed forces have a larger percentage of minorities than the general public, your decision to embroil this nation into a controversial bloody war against the peaceful citizens of Iraq will have a deliterious impact on the african american community - is this an example of the racial policies of this administration? In that blacks can die for this country but you are opposed to them voting?

Sound farfetched? No, it should'nt. ABC, CBS, NBC, NYT, NPR, etc., are all drafting these questions right now. Bet on it.

Lott has to GO and Bush has to be seen pushing him out!

Good grief. Karl Rove and W are the two best things to happen to the Republican party and CONSERVATIVES in over a decade. Get a grip.

You should not be dumping on Rove. He and GWB have a tough decision and are trying to navigate it with dignity.

Think of this. What if a political leader, of either party, one day decided to try and cheer up an old German WWII soldier at his 100th birthday party by saying ...

"Gee, I'm proud to have supported Adolf. And if he had won, this world would have been a better place with a lot less problems."

All hell would break loose overtop of that politician's head, would it not.

Listen, regardless of the distasteful prospect of letting racial politics dictate the US Senate's leaders, the Republican Party simply cannot allow someone like Trent Lott to be the face of the GOP.

I struggled with this all week, as I'm sure most thinking political junkies have.

Lott must go. It is the only way to stop the bleeding.

In fact, when Lott steps down, it will put the onus squarely on the Democrats, highlighting their duplicity in this entire matter.

Just like the old phrase, "God works in mysterious ways." I think this can be applied to politics also and could end up a plus for the GOP.
