Leave it to Lott to make this all about him.
What a f****** weasel.
Mere words cannot convey the depth of contempt I feel for him. It wasn't enough for him to emasculate the House during the Impeachment, it wasn't enough for him to agree to 'power sharing' when he had the majority, and it wasn't enough when he couldn't stop Jeffords from bolting to the Dems.
Oh no, he has to hold on the the ML job, no matter how much damage it does to his Party, the President, or the Nation.
Anyone with a shred of personal honor would acknowledge that they said something incredibly stupid, and reason from the leadership and be content with a Committe Chair. Noone seriously expects him to resign from the Senate itself, but Lott just can't quite wrap himself around the concept of personal honor.
Well, the rest of the Republicans should call him on this. Go ahead Cheerleader Lott, resign and negate the results of a National Election. Resign you seat and throw control of the Senate back to Tom Daschle.
Rank and file Republicans would be holding a lottery to see who got to hunt him down with dogs....

If it's a choice between temporarily losing the Senate and permanently ridding ourselves of this accomodationist wimp, then that's a no-brainer. This is the guy who stabbed the House managers in the back, and handed Tom Daschle the keys to the Senate. Good riddance to him, Jim Jeffords, Lincoln Chafee and the whole worthless RINO crowd. We can get our house in order, then take back the Senate.

Okay, that's it. He's finished. They should vote him out as leader, and immediately afterwards pump him full of a very strong sedative so he'll forget all about leaving the Senate and all about anything, and keep him pumped full of them round the clock for the rest of term, so he'll be a good boy like ol' Strom and just vote like he's told to.
Pretty d**n clear that the good of the party is not a priority for him, so he's got no business being its leader in the Senate.

This proves he is a POS. Even in disgrace, he STILL will seems unable to do anything to help the Republican party, and therefore, the country.
Would a REAL leader do this????????

three or four of the Senators viewed this as "blackmail," Well .. it is

Oh, poor Trent. Here's a Band-Aid for your (self-inflicted) boo-boo:
(:::[ ]:::)
Rank stupidity, utter fecklessness, complete cluelessness, and now a little temper tantrum. Pitiful.

If Lott so threatened, he should be replaced with extreme prejudice. Aside from the fact that he is an idiot, he is an idiot clymer. Big time. That is his shame, FBI files or not.

Newt resigned because he was going to be outed for his years-long affair with House staffer Callista Bialek during the House impeachment proceeedings. Newt betrayed his wife and us. He did the right thing by getting out.
Livingston resigned to set an example of responsibility to Bill Clinton and the Democrats. He earned my undying respect for that.
If this report is correct, Lott deserves nothing but contempt.

Finally develop some backbone, to bad it was four years ago.
When has a republician throwing himself on his sword gotten the party anything?

If the Republican party were to accept Lott's departure from the Senate at the price of losing the majority in the chamber, it would more good than harm over the long run. How can the Republican party advance, with a slender majority, under the "leadership" of a blackmailer? Senator Lott, if this report is true, is advertising his unfitness. If doesn't step down over the Thurmond remarks, he should step down for this disgusting threat. Stay on? The price of Lott's continuance in the Senate is likely to be a package of concessions to the affirmative action crowd, a kind of reparations. That is the price of a Lott.
Personally, I think Lott is bluffing. Were he to carry out his threat, he would find himself out of office, with no new friends on the Democratic side of the aisle and a whole new bunch of enemies where he once had colleagues. If he steps down as majority leader, he can have a modicum of a life. After all, the disaster was of his own making.
If Senator Lott is truly determined to spite his critics, President Bush should encourage him to switch parties. He could say, "On reflection, I wish to join the party of Senator Byrd out of the conviction that a man ought to join the group that best represents his beliefs." The Democrats would accept, of course, but it would guarantee President Bush's reelection in 2004.
If you want victory for a day, choice expediency. If you want a long term triumph, do the right thing.

Trent Lott, in a conference call with 27 GOP Senate Republicans today, said that he would leave the Senate if forced from the Leader position. It's all about you, isn't it Trent? You asshole.

This whole thing is a PC circus. Lott was being nice to an old geezer on his birthday, and stuck his foot in his mouth. The libs are just having a field day to score political points...period. What did they do when Byrd used the word "N...ger" on national TV last year? Diddly-squat.
This is now taking on the aura of a lynching. Lott is being publically humiliated and destroyed to teach the other white males out there what will happen if we stray (even accidentally or carelessly) off of the PC reservation.
To: sinkspur
Excuse my French, but to me it is now ineluctable that Lott is a first class asshole. It is all about Lott. Clearly, he doesn't give a detritus from his rear end about his favorite judicial nominee Pickering or anything else, if it interferes with Lott. I guess at this juncture, one should kiss his ass, and if a Pubbie is elected governor in Mississippi, then kick his butt as far out of the playing field as the best kicker in the NFL can muster. JMO.

If this is true, I say it's time to boot Trent out the door and hard. Self-serving threats such as this deserve no other response.
To: sinkspur
I thought he should stand up to the blackmailers and now it appears he is a blackmailer. What a clymer.

Senator Lott seems to forget that there were several million of us out here who busted their butts to get Talent, Chambliss, Coleman, et al elected so we could take back control of the Senate. We had hopes that the Democrat roadblock could be ended and action could be taken to keep this country from going down the tubes. We lost 2 years due to the dishonesty of Jeffords; we are now facing the possibility of pi**ing away 2 more. Our Republican Senators need to get their act together fast because there may not be a next time!
To: sinkspur
This is very bad because...
...um...
...why is this bad?
Senator Lott, as any Senator up in DC, has made mistakes. But that being said, the Republican Senators voted to make him Majority Leader when they regain control of the Senate. Should an attack by the left for a stupid, yet, blown out of proportion comment be cause for the Senators to all of a sudden decide that he isn't worthy of being the Senate Majority Leader?
For however light-hearted his comments were, some people feel that he meant something else, and that they were offensive. Senator Lott recognized that and has apologized for possibly offending anybody. Again today he came out and said again that racism is wrong and that civil rights are a must. As stupid as his comments were, I think it's a far stretch to believe that he wants to go back to segregation. That's for the segregationist party to support. And that is the party of slavery, the party of the confederacy, the party of the Klan, and the anti-civil rights party. That would be the Democratic party.
To: sinkspur
He might have threated that and if he did I hope his collegues teach him a good lesson. My guess, he is trying to protect his future, i.e. life after senate. I'm sure he probably intends to run again in 2006 and/or to have an active, profitable retirement. However, turncoat senators or senators forced to step down aren't invited to sit on many boards nor do they have lucrative speaking careers and it is doubtful he'd have much success as a lobbyist.
