I can accept that. For me, honestly, it took some research before the dots were connected. I wasn't up to speed on Thurmond's early days and didn't immediately make the connection.

Which brings up an interesting side note: There aren't many more people with Thurmond's past left in the Senate. We have to remember that this happened at Thurmond's 100th birthday party. He also had the entire Senate give him a moment of appreciation, as well as some testimonials by other Senators. The last Senator that I can recall living this long and still being in the Senate was Claude Pepper.

Who are the next Senators of that era who will retire? How will their retirement affairs be tainted by how the Democrats treated Lott? People haven't been dwelling on this much, but the whole Lott affair is also turning all the Thurmond tributes into back-handed compliments. How can they say anything of praise to Thurmond now and have it taken with any sincerity? How do we know they weren't feigning sincerity towards Thurmond all along?

I say this because the next in line for this treatment will be: 1) Robert Byrd, 2) Jesse Helms, 3)Ernest Hollings. What will happen to them and anyone who pays tribute to them?

Please explain to me how saying that someone who was running on and intended to carry out an explicitly racist platform should have won that election is not a racist statem

I still haven't heard any racism beyond the usual "connect the dots" proof.

Yup, lets dump Lott, you have convinced me. Why shouldn`t we agree with the Rats that most southern whites are racist. I mean, who needs the South, we can always get new voters in Oregon or maybe New York.

Who says we have to agree with the Rats about that statement?

The southerners I'm in touch with are saying that he needs to step aside not because of alleged racism but because of demonstrated stupidity.

If we let them get away with this, no Republican is safe from being Borked.

If we let Lott get away with being the Senate Idiot, no Republican agenda item is going to pass between now and 2004. And forget about the judges, too.

You want a majority leader who is completely unable to lead.

Forgive me for doubting your commitment to conservative causes.

How does it feel to be on the side of the racist Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton?

A broken clock is correct twice a day, son.

How does it feel to be on the same side as Tom Daschle?

If you have a hearing problem, perhaps you should stick a garden hose in your left ear and turn it on full force until the fecal material stops flowing from your right ear.

Pooh I have been very careful with you because I respect you but it only goes so far. So far tonight you have called me a lot of names including an oblique reference to my "Klan" roots and you don't have anything left in the bank so ease off.

Whatever one thinks of Trent Lott’s stint as Republican Leader, he does not deserve the treatment he is getting from right-wing journalists and pundits. Lott apologized for his comments approximately 1500 times in an interview with Sean Hannity yesterday. Do these pundits really believe that Republicans are going to get more than 10% of the black vote in 2004 if they dump Trent Lott? Reaching out to minority voters is fine, but you don’t abandon loyal allies when they’re facing hard times. As Morton Blackwell once said, “In politics you have two things—your friends and your word. Go back on either and you’re dead.”

Still fighting the good fight?

I know it must be disapointing to discover that freepers can be just as hypocritical as the dems, but for some people, this isnt about honor as much as about winning.

They would protect Trent Lott, because they are just like him.

Right, wrong, who cares? As long as we win.

You said you hadn't heard anything that would indicate that Lott's statement might be taken as a racist one. I was merely suggesting a potential cure for your apparent hearing problem.

Now, one more time: saying that Strom Thurmond, running on an explicitly racist platform that Stom himself has long since disowned, should have won that election--please explain to me how this is NOT a racist statement. You do a ton of arm-waving, but you never quite seem to get around to that little detail.

Does doing the right thing come second to the question of how many votes the right thing is worth?

BWAHAHAHA! Describing the Vacant Lott as a "loyal ally" makes perfect sense...if you're Tom Daschle!

Sorry, pal. You tried the "if you disagree with me you're a liberal."

I oppose child molestors. Therfore, anyone opposing me is a child molestor.

Playing the victim and feigning moral outrage are the centerpieces of modern American politics. In the Lott fiasco, the Left sees an opportunity to exploit a stupid remark with selective moral outrage

I still haven't seen anything racist in an off the cuff remark to an old man at a birthday party. But to be brutally honest, it is hard to see how Strom being elected in 1948 would have been worse than the sorry state of affairs we have today.
