I can understand the intitial desire to defend the context of what Lott said. I fully comprehend the position taken. However...

[IMHO] Trent Lott is on the outs. The President completely slammed the door shut on this thing earlier today but now you still have guys like Hannity trying to defend the context of Lott's remarks and introducing the Clintons, and Jackson so on and so forth.

Hannity needs to walk away from this. We all understand what is happening here. We all understand what the Liberals are doing.

With that said...

None of this would be happening if Lott hadnt said what he said. He is developing a track record for comments that "have to be taken in their context" that coincidentally happen to offend Blacks.

Lott needs to go and Hannity needs to let him go.

Part of me wants to defend Lott because he's a Republican who is being unfairly attacked. I disagree - Lott should stay - as much as I think The Repubs would be better off with a less compromising MW, especially now that we control the Senate and House and WH, Lott should stay because the dems will make asses out themselves over this issue and they will ultimately pay for it at the voters booth as they turn people off with their constant hypocrisy...

For a while I also thought Lott should go, but now I'm convinced that he should not only stay in office but should remain as majority leader for as long as he wants.

If the U.S. Senate determined that president of the United States was fit to stay in office despite committing multiple felonies while in office, then Lott can do whatever the f#ck he pleases even if it is learned that he used to burn crosses on front lawns all over Mississippi.

I don't see why... So Lott said something stupid. We never hear of any of the stupid things the democraps say on the news ad nauseam. In fact, the democraps defend someone actually DOING something wrong or immoral (as opposed to just saying something that can be considered insensitive) and say "he apologized, let's let it go/move on/nothing to see here."

Maxine Waters is a black version of the KKK herself and both Rev. Jackson and Sharpton have made comments.

My understanding is that there has been nothing in Lott's record to reflect racism in his voting. Actions speak louder than words and he has not acted as a racist.

It is time for conservatives get good at the game of throwing what people said back in their face as well. We should also go back decades if need be.
Democrats won't stop this and consider this an unchallenged playing field and will therefore keep this up until it is used against them back.
Liberal racists open their mouth far more than any accident a conservative ever makes and I think a huge compiling of records by conservatives of liberals would benefit conservatives greatly.

I think by far it is liberals who are racists in their actions and words.

So, even though I do think Lott is weak as a leader, I do not make this the issue for him to step down on, but I do think he should do so in summer sometime.

We need dynamic people, not him anyway. He should later resign the leadership, but NOT give up his senate seat. He does good there, just not good enough to be in leadership IMO!

I know there are known embarrasing racist statements made by Democrats that could be read to the press who ask about Lott that were NOT ACCIDENTS.
Get them out there and go on the attack I say!!!

What you do not appear to realize is that Lott's exact words, even without the context, had nothing at all of racist content or overtones. In fact, since a person's words have to be judged in light of similar, more explicit, things he has said on the same subject, Lott's words at Thurmond's 100th birthday party in no way could be construed as racist. Back in the 80's he said a similar thing and then he elucidated his comment by enumerating various ways things would have been different and why. None of them had any hint of racism. The current brouhaha is over a statement that is so general and non-specific that it serves excellently as a verbal Rorschach. The unimaginative see nothing but the equivalent of an inkblot. The disturbed racial opportunists, such as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, both denizens of psychologically murky waters, who are determined to create a meaning, do so, attribute it to him, and then use that to further their own political ends.

I don't like Trent Lott. I think his handling of the Senate during the trial phase of impeachment was absolutely and completely despicable. I think his offering to share power with Daschle and the Democrats was moronic. But the sheer amount of non-thinking, knee-jerk reactionism on this issue (meaning the lack of actual analysis of what was really said) among people who should know better (ie., Republicans) is breathtaking. That so many of them are so ready to resort to the same type of expediency that characterizes moral relativist, liberal Democrats shows how degenerate the American intellect has become.

Bush took part in this same specious mindset by condemning the remarks, thus giving credence to the completely out of touch with reality spin placed on them by those who deliberately used this for their own partisan aims. And Lott was just as foolish as Bush for apologizing. This is Democrat propoganda pure and simple. They were desperate to find anything as a rallying point after their disappointing election show (remember them talking about a 50 seat gain in the House?). You don't fight it by acquiescing to it. You show it for the carbuncle it is and then lance it.
