WHO WILL LEAD THE SENATE?-GOP Leaders Discussing How/Who Calls for Lott to Step Aside
The American Spectator ^ | Dec. 11, 2002 | The Washington Prowler

Posted on 12/11/2002 6:44:54 AM PST by ewing

Republicans on Capitol Hill and conservatives in Washington and around the country are discussing how best to call for Trent Lott's stepping aside as Senate Majority Leader.

According to a knowledgeable Senate source, GOP members of both houses are extremely concerned that Lott's comments have so derailed the momentum gained from the 2002 elections that it would be impossible come January to make numerous confirmations for the executive branch, begin planning a legislative agenda that includes accelerating the Bush tax cuts and pushing through a prescription drug plan for seniors.

Even more upsetting to Republicans is that realization that Lott's comments may make it virtually impossible to bring a number of potentially controversial judicial nominations to the Senate floor successfully.

This is a typical response from the wussy right. When the foibles of Clinton were exposed the entire Democrat party defended him, and he didn't resign. I'm no Lott fan. I don't think he's the sharpest knife in the drawer, but for God's sake Republicans get some backbone.

You ARE THE MAN! Perfect comment. This guy trained under Dick Morris who taught him to speak to HIS PEOPLE and Lott never learned that as leader of the Party he has to speak to all of the people. He Lott is a coward and a dolt.

I love J.C. Watts, too, but hasn't he recently announced his leaving the House (not the Senate)?

He was interviewed on either Hannity or another national conservative talk show. I think he also has a book out.

The double standard here is absolutely breathtaking.

So? Lott still has to go.

The problem with double standards is not that ours are higher, it's that the Democrats' are lower. The solution is not to become as protective of the stupidity of ours, it's to be more aggressive against the stupidity of theirs.

We can only blame the press so much in this. Who spoke out forcefully against Byrd's white n***** comments?

It looks like Trent Lott's going to be tossed out on his ear and it won't make a darned bit of difference. Not one more black will vote for the GOP. The incessant whinings of the various reverends will not cease.

I'm not a big fan of Lott's, but to think that canning him will provide a remedy is a pipe dream.

What does it say about "his own society"-and ours-that the movement to oust him over this remark has went the way it has, versus any attempts-were there any?-to oust him for his handling of the trial of der slickmeister???

It says that the GOP was gutless in confronting Lott's gutlessness. In some ways, we deserve this.

Trent Lott may have done the GOP a favor with his stupid remarks. Maybe we can get somebody with real leadership into his position.

We need to make the Democrats pay for this by giving them a new face as Senate Majority Leader who is tough and won't wimp out Lott-style. It should be a "be careful what you ask for - you may get it" kind of a lesson.

Yikes: Do we have a candidate?

Ron Paul

Let me know what brand of whiskey you're drinking and send me a case. Ron Paul is in the HOUSE. A little tough for him to become Majority Leader of the SENATE.

The GOP Senate will probably replace Trent with Strom as Senate Leader until next month's Leadership Election. Then they will vote for Jim Jeffords to replace Strom. If they don't do that, then they will probably do something really stupid.

Who would want this in a leadership role in the Senate?
