After a fiery speech by Thurmond at a Mississippi campaign rally for Ronald Reagan in November 1980, Lott, then a congressman, told a crowd in Jackson: "You know, if we had elected this man 30 years ago, we wouldn't be in the mess we are today."

And to think Danny Williams wasn't even invented yet.

Almost the same exact wording.......wow.

If true, he's toast as Majority Leader. If true, he should nip this in the bud and not run for that post in the next Congress, because if he's said it twice, what else are they gonna find?

Who cares. The RATS are looking for an easy way to tip the balance of the Senate back into their hands. Lott should tell them to piss off. If the RATS want his seat, they can run a candidate against him next time he is up for election.

Let's put it in context. If he said it in 1980, that was back when Reagan was "morning in America." It obviously referred to the disastrous administration of Jimmuh Cartuh.

Ask the house managers what they think of Lott - Henry Hyde, Bob Barr, (I can't remember them all) but it was Lott that prevented them from presenting their impeachment case against Clinton - remember?
Lott in my opinion is a gutless traitor to American and the constitution.

But if Lott goes, who replaces him? Here's an idea: how about letting Jim Jeffords become Majority Leader, provided he becomes a Republican again? It stands to reason he'd be very acceptable to the Democrats.
As you can tell, my day job is as a highly-placed Republican strategist. ;^)

Lott needs to step down as Majority Leader.... Before someone gets pissed off enough to bolt the party....

But Lott has no backbone himself... this is another example of inept leadership in the Senate.
To: walrus954
gee, endorsing RR in 1980 by saying he would be better than the liberalism and soft anti-Communism practiced by so many administrations was somewhow...a gaffe?
Drudge is pathetic to use this.

Bingo, and if he says it again 20 yrs from now, it would reflect on Clinton; for that matter if he said if we'd elected GHW ush instead of Clinton we'd have nabbed binLaden, and wouldn't be in this mess now. Or words to that effect--I'm sick of these damned racebaiting Democrat halfwits, and unable to fully express it.

Won't be sorry to see Lott go as majority leader, but not because of this. He's right. I would have voted for Thurmond, too, and there is not a shred of racism in me.
The Devil is allowed to play his games, and stir up confusion, but he won't have the last laugh.
