LOTT SAID IT BEFORE (Drudge Siren)
Drudge ^ | 12/10/02 | Drudge

Posted on 12/10/2002 6:58:42 PM PST by walrus954

After a fiery speech by Thurmond at a Mississippi campaign rally for Ronald Reagan in November 1980, Lott, then a congressman, told a crowd in Jackson: "You know, if we had elected this man 30 years ago, we wouldn't be in the mess we are today."

Hopefully, you see where this mindless frenzy you were instrumental in starting yesterday is leading.

We could be back to a power-sharing agreement with the Democrats, and one Lincoln Chaffee-hissy-fit from being in the GD minority, again.

All over a stupid remark at a birthday party for an old man that you people have blown into the equivalent of a Birmingham church bombing!

This is madness!

No one wants to lynch him (not me anyway) and no one said he committed a crime. Sheesh! He's just not equipped and politically viable as our leader in the Senate right now. He stepped in it himself. Many tried to get him to let someone else lead, but it's not about America, it's not about the GOP - it's about Lott's power-trip.

The problem seems to be that ol' Strom, at 100 years of age, is far sharper mentally than Lott is at 61.

With Lott in the leader's chair, every Democrat filibuster can be portrayed as being based in principle.

"You know, if we had elected this man 30 years ago, we wouldn't be in the mess we are today."

Actually, this statement is easily defensible, and it even puts his current comments in better context. Lott was reacting to things Strom was saying in 1980 (after his recanting of segregation) and therefore was saying that "this man", meaning the modern, evolved Strom Thurmond, would have made a great president 30 years ago. That's what he meant in 1980, and that's what he meant recently.

Don't you get it?

All these Lott hating nobodies are political geniuses, while the Republican crew that has taken and held the Senate for five elections in a row now, has been lead by two nincompoops - first Bob Dole (BTW, one of the most honorable men ever in the Senate, and a man who actually read much of the legislation that went before it), and Trent Lott.

No matter that the Republicans haven't held the Senate for 10 years in a row since 1920-1930, these Freepers are geniuses - the Republican Senators are a bunch of incomperable morons lead by a racist doofus who just can't get anything done.

Personally, I don't think Lott is a racist - I do think he is another self-serving politician who is more interested in his image and career than he is the truth, the constitution and the American people who want justice in this country.

I accuse him of obstruction of Justice - just like Reno and the rest of them who gave Clinton a pass.

That's not an apology. It's the celebrity "F*** YOU!" non-apology.

Like "If something I said hurt your feelings, I'm sorry that you feel that way."

Works for me in this case.

Lott needs to clarify his views. His "apology" was weaslesque. It is a shame, but Lott genuinely needs to say, that I believe segregation is wrong, Jim Crow is wrong, etc..

I originally thought it was a gaff. But combine his comments in 1980, with his support in the 80's and 90's of neo-confederate racists, and his comments this week, and I am really starting to wonder.

He is entitled to hold any views he wants. I make no bones about that. I am baffled as to what his views are though. He seems to say that he supported the dixiecrat philosophy, he writes articles for a magazine that rails against inter racial marriage, so I think he needs to hold a press conference and explain himself if he wants to keep his job.

If anybody has any comments from Lott that say specifically that he opposes segregation specifically, I would love to see them.

If you still fail to see the connection, pray consult with your eye care specialist.

I was referring to Lott's statement. I was listening with one ear when I heard it the first time and I didn't relate the comment to Blacks or segregation. Seemed to me he was merely trying to say something nice about Strom; making mention that he had once been a pres. candidate.

That's how I took it. Didn't say I didn't think it was a dumb thing to say but I think it is a leap to tie it to blacks. I think even Lott is smart enough not to say it if he had thought about it in racial terms.

Maybe you should think about jumping to conclusions, a la, Jesse and Al.

Wouldn't it be nice if Lott would straighten up, say what you just said, and clarify his 2 comments over 20 years on this Thurmond-follow-up strike out. I'm waiting.

Who the hell cares what you want? If I had my way he would stand up and say "go to hell" to the poverty pimps and race whores. In 1950 we had segregation and blacks were the poorest in the nation, in 2002 and 6 trillion dollars later we still have segregation and blacks are still the poorest in the nation.

Dole was an honorable man, who did the honorable thing in 1996.

Trent Lott is a guy with a dead squirrel mounted on his head, who has bent over and dropped trou every time the Democrats told him to, and who has a penchant for making very conveniently timed stupid remarks.

Remember, it's his fault Landrieu won (his comments energized black voters, costing us a seat in the House and in the Senate).

That's bullshit, and you know it. This wasn't even in the press until Sunday. Black voters were driven to the polls on Saturday as they always are by the Democrats. Louisiana has a collective shoe-sized IQ, and electing Mary Landrieu assures that cheap Mexican sugar will drive the Louisiana cane growers out of business.

The sooner he's out of the Senate, the less damage he's doing to our party, the better.

Yeah, then somebody else will become the scapegoat for your incessant bitching when we're back to a power-sharing agreement with Daschle.

You're galactically politically stupid.

YOU WROTE:

Ask the house managers what they think of Lott - Henry Hyde, Bob Barr, (I can't remember them all) but it was Lott that prevented them from presenting their impeachment case against Clinton - remember?

Lott in my opinion is a gutless traitor to American and the constitution.

MY COMMENT:

ABSOLUTELY!! Lott bragged to the Washington Post that he tanked the trial on purpose because he didn't think he had the votes. He was the one person most responsible for there not being a real trial in the Senate. He "fixed" the most important trial in American history by forbidding evidence damaging to Clinton to be offered. He is a disgrace to the United States and the Republican Party.

Any reason to get rid of Lott is good enough--and being an open racist is a pretty good one. Lott must go--and soon!!

Lott is just not qualified for this position. He blunders everything. This man should never have been in that position. Now he has hurt the Pubbies & put him & his party in a no-win situation. Of course the many of us that wanted him gone long ago could say "I told you so". And I won't change my stance that this guy is compromised.

I think you're right. If this is the case then he has nothing to aplogize over whatsoever. It's clear somebody wants Lott out of there.

A halfway intelligent Senator would've looked up the particulars and realized that he was fulsomely praising an explicitly segregationist platform.

That's how I took it. Didn't say I didn't think it was a dumb thing to say but I think it is a leap to tie it to blacks. I think even Lott is smart enough not to say it if he had thought about it in racial terms.

If your hypothesis is true, then Lott has to step down as Majority Leader--we cannot afford stupdity in leadership with a one-vote margin.

Maybe you should think about jumping to conclusions, a la, Jesse and Al.

OK, because you are completely ignorant of American history, Lott gets a pass.

Sorry. Lott's stupidity doesn't excuse him, and neither does yours.

And now you are standing with the Democrats demanding he "Drop Trou" once again
