Actually, this statement is easily defensible, and it even puts his current comments in better context. Lott was reacting to things Strom was saying in 1980 (after his recanting of segregation) and therefore was saying that "this man", meaning the modern, evolved Strom Thurmond, would have made a great president 30 years ago. That's what he meant in 1980, and that's what he meant recently.
