LOTT SAID IT BEFORE (Drudge Siren)
Drudge ^ | 12/10/02 | Drudge

Posted on 12/10/2002 6:58:42 PM PST by walrus954

After a fiery speech by Thurmond at a Mississippi campaign rally for Ronald Reagan in November 1980, Lott, then a congressman, told a crowd in Jackson: "You know, if we had elected this man 30 years ago, we wouldn't be in the mess we are today."

I'm no Trent Lott apologist, but he is right about one thing, if we had elected Strom Thurmond back in 1948 America would have been much better off.

Boy, you'd better watch out saying things like that around here. Next thing you know, it will be wrong to have supported Barry Goldwater, since he voted against the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Then you're REALLY going to get it!

Most Freepers are not able to understand that Thurmond was 500 times better a choice than Truman or Milquetoast Dewey or the Commie Wallace. Nor can they grasp that Lott was not evil for squelching a trial of Clinton which would have ended in abysmal failure for the Republicans. Everyone already knew Clinton was a scumbucket, and a trial wouldn't have changed anything. But don't going trying to tell that to the armchair political geniuses on FR.

How much do you want to bet that it was a Republican that dug up this news story to get Lott out of his majority leader position? That's what my money's on. And to that Republican, I say, "Nice job."

Not if Lott resigns the Senate.

What other liberal demands would you be willing to buckle under too? What Lott said is not worthy of his stepping down as Majority leader or as the Senator from Mississippi, Only the weak of heart would fall for this crap.

Don't get me wrong... I have never been a supporter of Trent Lott as the majority leader or minority leader. But I refuse to go along with this witch hunt, You can, But I refuse

When have we HAD control with Lott at the helm?

If he stays on in office, he better come clean about whatever's in his FBI files...

Lott's statement didn't qualify.

Who cares. The RATS are looking for an easy way to tip the balance of the Senate back into their hands. Lott should tell them to piss off. If the RATS want his seat, they can run a candidate against him next time he is up for election.

Whoa, we just want him to resign as majority leader, he doesn't have to give up his seat in the Senate. If the good people of Missouri want to elect him, that's their business. But he shouldn't be representing the national party, if he's going to act like this.

He said that shortly after Nov. 5 too. The problem isn't the selective charges that he's a racist, it's that he's made a major issue that will render the spineless twit impotent as well.

Guess what; there are other GOP Senators that can and will get a ban on PBA passed, sent to Bush, who had better sign it.

Let me ask you something.

If you said something that somebody branded "racist," and there was a hue and cry for you to give up the thing you liked most at your work to the point where you had to give it up, would you continue to work at that place? Especially when you basically admitted to being a racist by giving up the thing you liked most?

Matt can make or break people. He has just finished off Trent.

Matt is a egotistical jerk. Lott will stay, if anyone is going anywhere it's Dashcle, not Lott.

Lott gathering a spine would be the best case scenario out of all this Lott stupidity should he not step out of leadership and just work hard in the Senate to persuade as best he can (yeah, right - he persuaded the RATS into a powersharing role last time).

Good Lord... Jackson Lee and Cummings aren't even Senators themselves. Don't you think you're over-dramatizing just a bit?

Perhaps you should pay a little more attention to the outrageous demands being made of Lott from the Congressional Black Caucus.

He will.

Would you stay on in a job where you had been branded a racist, when you could make millions as a lobbyist elsewhere and not have to put up with the likes of Elijah Cummings judging your suitability to be a Senator?

If you think Lott would stay on, you're hopelessly naive.

Umm, because world-wide slavery was accepted then and many of our Founding Fathers put the framework in place to move America out of slavery? I don't know if Lott is a racist or not, but apparently it's not politically expedient in this day and age for a Majority Senate Leader to let anyone think you could be...

Why .. because he didn't use the words you wanted him to??

Because the words used didn't equal an apology. The construction "if I offended anyone" is basically saying that any offense taken is not the fault of the guy speaking the offensive words.

We've still got a majority. Remember, it's his fault Landrieu won (his comments energized black voters, costing us a seat in the House and in the Senate). The sooner he's out of the Senate, the less damage he's doing to our party, the better. Why do you think Tom Daschle is so keen on us keeping him?

If Lott has a backbone he better put it to use now!, Because if he doesn't this NON-ISSUE will cost us dearly. I'm no fan of Lott's leadership abilities, but now is the time for him to stand up and it's also the time for conservatives to see what this left wing witch hunt, for what it is, and fight back

If I were Lott, I would not have apologized, that was the only wrong thing he did. It was a sign of his inherent weakness.

You have that exactly correct. He is spineless. Should have said, when Jesse Jackson, Al Gore, etc, etc, etc, apologize, I'll apologize.

"Umm, because world-wide slavery was accepted then and many of our Founding Fathers put the framework in place to move America out of slavery?"

Segregation was accepted in the south when Thurmond championed it. And he later personally recanted his views, which many of our founders never did regarding slavery.

"I don't know if Lott is a racist or not, but apparently it's not politically expedient in this day and age for a Majority Senate Leader to let anyone think you could be..."

I can see that by the hysteria over his innocuous comments. And given the fact that liberals are on the prowl 24 hours a day looking for a statement they can twist into an allegation of racism, how do you propose we appease them? The Congressional Black Caucus considers anti-crime bills and tax cuts to be racist.

Wouldn't it be nice if Lott would straighten up, say what you just said, and clarify his 2 comments over 20 years on this Thurmond-follow-up strike out. I'm waiting.
