After a fiery speech by Thurmond at a Mississippi campaign rally for Ronald Reagan in November 1980, Lott, then a congressman, told a crowd in Jackson: "You know, if we had elected this man 30 years ago, we wouldn't be in the mess we are today."

Why would Tom Daschle need to convince anybody that he is an idiot, it's self evident. Some folks need reminding :o)

Continue what?
I know all about the segregated South - I've interviewed many people of both races who lived through it, and understand the historical underpinnings of all of that controversy. Again, I would have voted for Thurmond, and not for any reasons of race.

First off, Lott must go regardless of this entire situation. The guy's just a complete RINO buffoon.
Having said that....this whole situation is nothing more than a head-hunting mission by the pricks in the liberal media and congress. Where were the calls for resignation when Sen. Byrd called certain trashy white people "white ni**ers"? Where was the media when the whole Tawana Brawley (sp?) thing played out? Where was the media when AlGore compared right wing nuts to Down's Syndrome sufferers? When has the media done any stories on how Reginald Denny is getting along these days? And etc., etc., etc..........

a constituency that makes up nearly a fifth of this country. Uhh, 13% isn't "a fifth." Nor is it "nearly a fifth."
And your premise would seem to be that there's some legal or institutional hurdle to a black person running for the Senate. There isn't, and plenty have run. We just haven't chosen one lately. And the sky hasn't fallen. Imagine that.
Maybe you're ready to go the route of affirmative action for Senators, but I'll stick with good old fashioned elections thanks.

It would give Bush two more years where he can't get his economic program through Congress, making his reelection in 2004 significantly less likely.

I am the kind of dumbass who would expect a screw-up to turn around and do right by his party, after inflicting such a major wound on it. You sound like a mother.
"Do right by his party"? What the hell does that mean? "Doing right by his party" to me, means he stays and takes on these racial prostitutes who countenance the Klu Klux Klan and anti-semitic bigots in their midst, but jump on a Republican Senator who was just trying to pay tribute to an old man!
I'm sick of kowtowing to these professional blacks. We're NEVER going to get their votes anyway. Who the hell cares if the chips they carry on their shoulders get knocked off through an innocent comment?
I don't get what sickness has come over Free Republic the last 48 hours. I don't get the self-righteous boobs who just can't let impeachment go, and are willing to sacrifice the Senate Majority because Clinton was not convicted!
This is effing MADNESS!

The ONLY reason that I would support Lott on this is because of the liars and the hypocrites on the other side and the media trying to run him off. I wanted him gone a LONG time ago but ON MY TERMS, NOT THEIRS.

here is why he is being attacked......
Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott said he will promise a partial birth abortion ban.
During an interview with American Family Radio Wednesday, Lott said, "I will call it up, we will pass it, and the president will sign it. I'm making that commitment - you can write it down."

Yep. And you just know the public perception will continue to be manipulated by the liberals, because obviously, if Lott didn't do anything wrong, then why did he resign? The spin will be that Lott is, in fact, a racist. And Drudge is only helping to add to that spin.
It's a wicked game, but we absolutely MUST stand up and fight against this crap. Amazing, too, how so many Dems rallied around Clinton in 1998, but look how so many Republicans want to dump Lott.
For so long, many here have said that Republicans need to get a spine- especially Lott. Well now is the chance to show that spine and fight against this liberal onslaught.

I admire James Madison. I believe he was a brilliant political theoretician. I'm glad he served as president of the United States and I'm even more happy that he was one of the leading forces behind our Constitution. I also revere that document, and admire the men who ratified it.
That is my actual opinion.
Is it a racist opinion?
If so, why?
If not, why not?
I'd like to hear an answer from those who are screaming for Lott's scalp.

I agree - the republicans did an extremely poor job in educating the public on its history...
the civil rights act of 1964 would not have passed without the republican votes -
the first black in congress was a republican
the first black senator was a republican - 3 in total - the rats only had carol mosely braun - for the entire senate history
thurmond was a dixiecrat in 1948, elected as a democrat in 1954, vote no in civil rights act as a democrat
algore sr, sen. fulbright (klinton's mentor) - voted no in the civil rights act
the most senior dem. senator in the senate is a former kkk member and had repeatly used the N world on tv
the most powerful blacks in this country is powell and rice - both are appointed by a republican admin. based on merits rather than skin color
the most powerful slavemasters of the blacks are the self-appointed black leaders - they kept on complaining on the inequality issue and yet had done zitch for the blacks in poor neighbourhoods - of couse they lined their pockets thru of cash thru extortions from corporate america or other shady means...
time for the public to get the truth...
but still - it is time for lott to get the hell out of the leadership position - once he is out of the leadership position, no one would care about wtf he says - because he will be just a member of the senate...he no longer represents the face of the national republican party.
To: Poohbah
It would give Tommy Daschle another two years to convince the world that he's a blithering idiot. You assume that Daschle would not learn from his mistakes.
He's not as big an idiot as you think. Nor is Lott.
Perhaps your "idiot meter" needs an adjustment.
To: winin2000
Call me names if you like. Blacks just lost the only elected Republican in the Capitol that looked like them. Until you guys purge the racist element of your party, you will never win black voters. I'm sure the same can be said of the Democrats and white male voters.
I wouldn't stoop to defend my beliefs to you, who believe there is a difference between "those people" and "us knuckle-dragging Freepers."
You're all Americans, and that is the point, and until you, Farrakhan, Trent Lott, Al Sharpton, and everyone else gets that through their head, this stupid argument (and it is stupid) will go on.
I feel fine, and unlike some people, I don't post on message boards surrounded by people who believe as I do to feel better about myself, I seek out people I disagree with for fun. Enjoy the news cycle.

Trent Lott should be replaced in his next primary not because he has praised the great Strom Thurmond, but because he is CORRUPT. But we don't exercise over little things like official corruption these days, do we? It's who said the "n" word in his youth, and who has not bowed to the cultural elites that matters.

In case you didn't know it, Lott maybe the strongest tax cut advocate in the Senate. That ALONE doesn't not make him a RINO, on par with Lincoln Chafee. He is a true blue supply sider, and he is badly underestimated by the rank and file because they don't care to watch him play great D.Give him a year with a majority and the WH, and then keep score.
To: Weimdog
Not all 'civil rights' bills are created equal. Some are simply a way to politically make Republicans look bad, because they aren't about helping society and are loaded with lots of communist, big government junk.
How can Vacant Lott ever stand up to ANY proposed Civil Rights legislation every again, no matter how horrible it is? He, once again, is a failed leader. It's time for him to take the hit personally and step down from leadership. If he's a team player, he will remain in the Senate and take the final hit that (self-imposed) that takes him out.
To: kcvl
I agree, Lott lost my support when he decided he would share power with the RATS when the Senate was 50/50 and we had the majority with Cheney's vote. There is no way in hell that sawed off little Satanic Troll Tom Daschle would of done the same if the tables were turned!
Lott is not the ideal person to be leading the Senate, BUT I'll be damned if I want to see us cave under to the RATS over this NON-ISSUE

The rest of your post, frankly, makes little sense.
