A. Yes

B. Yes

C. Yes

D. NO

The War on Terror AND the War on Drugs are both a FARCE as long as the borders are not 'controlled.' This country is a FARCE if the authorities refuse to enforce the law (without borders, we have no country).

Protect out borders, language and culture. Start by sealing the borders and curtailing automatic citizenship for the newborn of manual, day workers or illegals.

I did a tally as of response #183. Why did I do this?

When I state my opinion to elected officials, I want to back it up with numbers. That demonstrates that (1) I am not a lone voice and (2) The sentiment is such that politicians are going to have to factor it into their strategies to get votes, much as the talk-TV people are using it for ratings. You might want to cite this informal survey and the results when contacting those in a position to change things. You'll be taken much more seriously if you let it be known that you talk up your views.

I also wanted people to express themselves without fear of being flamed. I'm impressed by the quality of many comments, both those who were with the majority and those who weren't.

With 137 tallied votes, by the formula 1/(square root of responses), the margin of error would be less than 10%, if you're into that stuff.

A. The borders of the US should be carefully monitored to eliminate illegal entry into the country as much as possible

Yes-134(97.8%); No-2(1.5%); Depends/Qualified-0; NoResponse-1(0.7%)

-------------

B. Those who are here illegally should be sent home

Yes-126(92.0%); No-4(3.0%); Depends/Qualified-5(3.6%); NoResponse-2(1.5%)

------------

C. Legal entry into the country should be severely curtailed or eliminated

Yes-108(79.4%); No-25(18.4%); Depends/Qualified-2(1.5%); NoResponse-1(0.7%)

-------------

D. None of the above. We should supportour elected officials, policies and goals with regard to the borders. (NB: This should have been worded to vote for it if you accepted either of these positions)

Yes-2(1.5%); No-129(94.9%); Depends/Qualified-1(0.7%); No Response-4(2.9%)

I probably made a few small tally errors, since I did this the old fashoined way, but nothing that significantly changes the results. One thing I found interesting is that on "C" a significant percentage (18.4%) supported legal immigration with a sane policy.

What this tells me is that if those who are concerned about the borders and illegal entry into the country are ignored, there is the real opportunity for a new political voice to emerge and support these views. It's nice to have numbers behind that kind of statement.

Hey ese, there be many illegal immigrants coming from south of the border.
And plenty are pouring in from Canada...did ya know that eh?

Obviously our current policy and actions taken are not working. Line the borders with electrified barb wire and see how many come over. Illegal immigrants cost us too much in taxes. Keep them out. And send the ones already over here back to their homes. If they want in America so bad, they can go through the proper channels.

My opinion on this matter has changed within the past few months. Previously, I was as ardent an anti-amnesty person as you could find. Then, one bit of wisdom and one bit of information made me change my mind.

The info was contained in an article on Free Republic concerning the growing economic, technological, and military power of China. China's population is currently about 1.3 billion and growing. Ours, on the other hand, is about 280 million and without (legal and illegal) immigration, would actually be shrinking. In simple terms, it is my opinion that economic troubles are much more difficult to avoid with a static/contracting population. Furthermore, China is already showing what they can do with this enormous human resource as there is hardly a country in the world without a sizable Chinese enclave and they have made tremendous economic strides in recent years, in spite of their corrupt, thuggish communist government.

The wisdom came from Teddy Roosevelt, when addressing a group of liberal protestant pastors in 1911:

"If you do not believe in your own stock enough to see the stock kept up, then you are not good Americans, you are not patriots, and ... I for one shall not mourn your extinction; and in such event I shall welcome the advent of a new race that will take your place, because you wil have shown that you are not fit to cumber the ground."
If we are to meet the Chinese challenge in the 21st century, and maintain an insuperable and vibrant America, we're going to need to see the US population increase to at least 500 million, in my opinion. Right now, the only way to achieve this is through immigration. Of course, it goes without saying that we need to do our part to make sure that those coming in do so within the law and become good American citizens -- jettisoning the totalitarian baggage of their homes for a love of freedom and republican representative democracy.

For the record, I'm an ardent lover of this country, its history, culture, institutions, and people -- and the grandson of an illegal immigrant.

Your argument about a Chinese challenge makes sense. I would think, however, that in the long run we would be better off if Mexico became a country where democracy flourished and its citizens could stay there and have a decent life. The time could come where we would need a strong Mexico to stand along side us as an ally. And, no country is going to become strong if those who want a decent job and a decent life have to leave.

As far as your being a descendent of an illegal, it was a different time. There was a greater need for people to grow the US when your grandfather came here; there was less of a threat from the aims of those who chose to come here.
