Quick Heads Up: Did I Hear Right? Hackworth Called Cheney a Draft Dodger?

Posted on 12/05/2002 2:04:54 PM PST by Arthur Wildfire! March

My ears might have deceived me. Did I hear correctly on the Sean Hannity Show? Did Hackworth call Cheney a draft dodger?

That puts him as a married 24-year-old in 1965. Wouldn't that have made his being drafted unlikely?

Your football talk is non-germane to much of anything. I assume I'm supposed to be impressed by it; sorry, New Yorker, I'm not.

Thats OK, you don't impress me at all. And though I grew up in the brownstones next to Shea Stadium, I haven't lived in New York in many, many moons.

And by the way, my football talk is germane. You stated that Namath couldn't be 4F and play football. That statement was made from ignorance since you don't know that the physical requirements of a drop back quaterback vs those of a grunt are different.

I took the physical and passed. The physical I took was at the induction center in Brooklyn, N.Y. I also played football.

I played football in college with guys who wer 4F and guys who were recently returned from Vietnam. Everybody got along fine.

Since I have no idea who you support, I can't justly answer but I am aware of certain string pulling to get dubya into the ANG over many other qualified candidates. And someone mentioned callup of Guard and Reserve forces for Vietnam duty. It did not happen and was not about to happen. Thanks to LBJ. He wanted his "guns and butter" and couldn't have the butter if he got war declared and the reserves called up. So it was regular forces who did the work and we wondered why even HAVE the reserves if they would not use them. Only way for a reservist to get called up was for him to miss drills... I had one in my shop during a Carib float in '68. So it was KNOWN to be safe.

I don't recall Cheney ever saying he loathed the military or showing contempt for it

He did say the reason he didn't serve was "I had better things to do." Maybe this isn't contempt for the military, but it does show a certain amount of arrogance and elitism.

Can you provide the statments that you are questioning?

``I had other priorities in the '60s than military service. ... I don't regret the decisions I made. I complied fully with all the requirements of the statutes, registered with the draft when I turned 18. Had I been drafted, I would have been happy to serve.''..."

A "chickenhawk" is a male child molestor who goes after pre-teen boys

Ain't that the truth.

Hack is a pole smoker and is way off base on his reckless charges. It has even infected the canteen. The coverup of the chemical weapons in the Gulf War by Bubba Clinton was intentional and designed to create dissention in the military. Don't fall for it, it's a setup by the Big RAT himself.

Do you have a patent on the mind reading machine or the internet truth detector algorithm?

I agree with you on civilian control and Cheney's current good judgement.

The reference to Cheney having better things to do can be found in the Washington Post. There also it lists his deferments for college and as a Father. He also made the statement that he would have been happy to serve if called. What a liar.

Is Hackworth on McCain's '04 team?

Possible, but I doubt it. Hack is just Hack, and remember he makes his living being Hack, aside from his 0-6's pension that is. Mostly I like him, but his is a grunts perspective, and while it takes grunts to fight and win a war, it takes more than that, it takes guys like Stormin' Norman, and guys like Rummy to support them. It also takes President's and SecDefs who know their own limitations and lack of expertise, who leave the operational side of war to those with the training and experience in it.

No, nimrod. But if you wanna be the bigshot that sends MY son off to war, you'd best have served yourself and KNOW what he's gonna be facing. If your country isn't worthy of your life, you're not worthy of leading it. PERIOD.

Personally, I think Cheney is a very decent man. On the other hand, he planned for the military cutbacks after Desert Storm. We who served during this time should admit this one. The real cuts of course came when Clinton took over. As for Hack...he served and did his job. Personally I don't think much of full-birds, but this man bled on the field with everyone else so everyone had better listen to what he has to say.
