Black squirrels in eastern Iowa, they were indigenous to Arsenal Island and finally made it across the river.

People won't be so impressed with the little bugger if it's carrying rabies, Bubonic plague, and a few other nasty diseases and bits some nitwit enviro-wacko trying to feed it.

So the very idea of wildlife makes you afraid of rabies and plagues? - Get out of the city much? Relax... its a cute white squirrel. People can feed it a nut or two or think it gives them good luck without being wackos. I think it is a bit more crazy to immediately think of killing anything that moves.

Students will do all sorts of stupid things.
I used to clean up the statue of Alexand Hamilton at CU. Others would blow a kiss at the statue of Alma Mater.

While hiking on the Tonto trail in the Grand Canyon, my buddy and I had to almost physically chase away the squirrels that were DETERMINED to get into our backpacks and eat our food!

princeton has black squirrels

Indeed they do. Grey ones too, but the black squirrels seem to be holding their own. The Alumni Weekly had an article about them a little while ago.

We were up in D.C. Thanksgiving weekend doing the usual tour of attractions on the Mall for the kids. Down by the WWII memorial under construction at the E end of the Reflecting Pool, there were a couple of very bold (and very very fat but ordinary grey) squirrels who climbed up the anchor construction fence expectantly. A couple of kids were feeding them Dorito chips and gave some to my kids. These squirrels came right over the fence and walked onto my son's arm to get the chips. They were the size of rabbits and so fat that they waddled as they walked. They must live on junk food from passersby (wonder what their cholesterol and BP is like).

Rodents around cities have a high probability of carrying dangerous deseases like rabies and Bubonic plague.

I don't fear wildlife, but I do give it the respect it deserves. I prudently stear clear of species likely to carry deseases and ones large enough or mean enough to consider me a snack. :) There is a reason they call it "wild"life. If you want a pet, go to the pet store a buy a gerbil. Leave the wild rodents to gather their nuts and dodge snakes and birds of prey.

Thanks for the civil response... I kindof lashed out back there! I deserved a flame and was spared. Thanks.

Please tell me this is not a real college. It's a college for "special" students? Right?? Right???

The school really exists. My brother got his degree there. Back then, it was called "North Texas State University" (NTSU), but later changed itself to "University of North Texas" (UNT). A move was started to merge it with the women's college nearby and call it "Central University of North Texas" but the regents thought better of it.

On my way to my first class at UNC (Macro Economics 101) in August 1973, I was approaching Gardner Hall when I heard a rustling starting near the top of one of the large oaks that grow there abouts.

Presently, a squirrel landed about 6 feet away, barely missing the red brick walk way. (Fortunately, it had rained the night before and the ground was soft.) I stopped and looked at the squirrel. It shook it's head and looked at me as if to say, "Haven't you ever seen a squirrel fall out of a tree?," before running back up the aforementioned oak.

An indellible memory of my first day at UNC. I still think that squirrels are stupid and NOT good to eat.

Ah yes....the uppity Squirrels of Chapel Hill. Think they own the place, they do. I once shoved a squirrel off a 3rd floor deck of a Chapel Hill apartment. The lousy rat walked away from it.

But I have some happier memories of UNC squirrels. Like the time one squirrel got caught in a tree whilst it was being rolled after a basketball game. :)
