On my way to my first class at UNC (Macro Economics 101) in August 1973, I was approaching Gardner Hall when I heard a rustling starting near the top of one of the large oaks that grow there abouts.

Presently, a squirrel landed about 6 feet away, barely missing the red brick walk way. (Fortunately, it had rained the night before and the ground was soft.) I stopped and looked at the squirrel. It shook it's head and looked at me as if to say, "Haven't you ever seen a squirrel fall out of a tree?," before running back up the aforementioned oak.

An indellible memory of my first day at UNC. I still think that squirrels are stupid and NOT good to eat.

Ah yes....the uppity Squirrels of Chapel Hill. Think they own the place, they do. I once shoved a squirrel off a 3rd floor deck of a Chapel Hill apartment. The lousy rat walked away from it.

But I have some happier memories of UNC squirrels. Like the time one squirrel got caught in a tree whilst it was being rolled after a basketball game. :)
