Turkey Is Among "Most Reliable" of U.S. Allies
by Gerry J. Gilmore
CHARLESTON, S.C., Dec. 2, 2002 -- A senior U.S. administration
official traveling with Deputy Defense Secretary Paul D.
Wolfowitz praised Turkey as one of the "most reliable allies" of
the United States.
Wolfowitz's trip to London, Brussels, Belgium, and Turkey was
delayed because a faulty part developed in his C-17 plane's
backup communications system. The group flew here Dec. 1 from
Andrews Air Force Base, Md., to replace the part, as required by
regulation to fly overseas, an Air Force official noted.
The deputy secretary's group departed Charleston about five hours
later for London, where he is slated to meet with senior British
leaders. He then travels to Ankara, Turkey, for discussions with
top Turkish officials.
In Charleston, the U.S. official noted to reporters traveling
with Wolfowitz that Iraq would be high on discussion lists in
Great Britain, Turkey and at NATO.
The official said Turkey recently elected a new government whose
majority party, although comprised of an Islamic base, has
declared for the continuation of a democratic and secular state.
Turkey continues to provide Operation Northern Watch air bases
from which U.S. and coalition planes over fly northern Iraq, the
official noted.
Turkey has been a staunch U.S. ally since the Korean War, the
official said. Today, its assistance continues to be valuable,
the official continued, whether as another strong ally to
confront Saddam Hussein to convince him to give up his weapons of
mass destruction peaceably or as a potential partner in a
possible war with Iraq should Hussein refuse.
As U.N. inspectors traverse Iraq looking for prohibited weapons,
the official remarked that the first real test of Saddam's
sincerity comes Dec. 8, when he has to declare his entire WMD
inventory.
Following Turkey, Wolfowitz will jet to NATO Headquarters in
Brussels to meet with alliance leaders.
The trip is the first of a series over the next few weeks in
which senior U.S. leaders will travel to several regions, the
official said. The trips are intended to enhance support for
Iraqi disarmament and to sound out allies for assistance in the
event Hussein reneges.

Remember the Arabs saying that the US doesn't have the guts to get heavily involved in ground action within the middle east? Well, they're about to get a real good look at modern American warfare - at full speed with no NATO allies to slow us down. Be careful what you wish for, ragheads.
As for air support, the world thinks they got a good preview of what we'll do from Afghanistan. Not. Note to the Iraqis: If you haven't managed to shoot down more than one propeller driven drone in the last 11 years, what makes you think you can stop one of these?
Sleep tight, Iraq. We're coming for you.
but I couldn't have phrased it as well as you did!!
I was thinking "Pippi Brickstockings!!"
your photo sit-reps are a great source of intel and understanding!!

INSIGHT On The News online: "JIHADISTS CHANGE TERROR STEREOTYPE" by Scott Wheeler (ARTICLE SNIPPET: ""It's the Joseph coat of terrorism," one former terrorism investigator tells Insight, referring to the Old Testament account of Joseph's coat of many colors. "The next wave of terrorism could be carried out by people with fair skin, blond hair and blue eyes." More than 10 years ago, Iran and the al-Qaeda terrorist network began recruiting and training Bosnian Muslims for war against Orthodox Christian Serbs and Catholic Croats in order to expand the Muslim base in Eastern Europe. After an international peace agreement left a Muslim leader in a power-sharing role, mujahideen fighters no longer had a cause for martyrdom in the former Yugoslavia. But experts tell Insight that the sponsors of the Muslim campaigns in the Balkans have not decommissioned their jihadist forces in Bosnia, Albania and elsewhere in the region. Efforts by U.S. policymakers to save Muslim lives and autonomy in the Balkans by imposing peace plans that included Muslim power-sharing apparently were unappreciated, and dismantling the jihadists' training camps there was not a priority of the U.S. government.") Of the 38, 000 "Condor" applications subsequently processed through Aug. 1, 2002, about 280 names turned up on the anti-terrorism lists. The State Department was given a refusal recommendation for 200 visa applicants, but that came after the 30-day hold had expired meaning the visas had already been issued. Edolphus Towns (D-NY) justify holding a reception for the Mujahedin-e Kalq? The U.S. State Department, since 1994, has listed this group as one of the most dangerous terrorist groups in the world. The State Department says that this Marxist-Muslim group has killed many Americans and had blown up a number of U.S. facilities in Iran. This group participated in the seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979. He was also initially the "Governor" of Kuwait after Iraq's invasion of the Gulf state in August 1990, and is now one of the Baath Party regional command leaders.
