The fact that Maher freely admitted in open court that he did it pretty much sealed it for me. Besides, if the Monagasque authorities really wanted to keep him quiet, why did they levy only a 10-year sentence (with the possibility of parole in an incredible
3 months)? Wouldn't a true "kangaroo" court have sentenced him to a term so long that they would have had to pipe in sunshine into his cell on alternate Thursdays?
If Monaco = Iraq when it comes to justice systems, they've got a heck of a long way to go to treat prisoners as badly as Saddam does.

I don't think anyone said that. In like the first 30 posts there were people saying that they didn't know who it was, but they weren't saying he was guilty either, they were all just fighting over whether or not the title of the thread was appropriate.

Why would "an air tight" case take nearly 3 years to come to trial?
Wear someone down for 3 years and then a "confession" comes.
To: Rodney King
There were several names, in the beginning of the thread, who didn't know who he was....somewhere down the line, some of those same names were saying he was guilty.....I didn't write them all down, the thread was moving to fast for me to even remember these people....many I didn't even recognized from most any other threads (not that I'm on every thread, of course). You go back and look, you'll find the initial "ignorants of Ted Maher" become the judges, all in a short period of time.
To: nicmarlo
Oh, then there were some who said, yeah, I remember I heard he said he lit a fire.....(trailing off to the sunset); that's all they knew about Ted Maher.....but they were adamant, they knew all the facts and that one phrase had to be right; I had to prove there was the credible possibility that that "admission" was made under duress...you go back and look.

see also my post #365--accidentally posted to myself (I'm tired, couldn't sleep), so I'm not too awake here.

Are you under the illusion that no one who didn't regularly post to the Free! Ted! Maher! threads didn't know the details of this case? And that certain Freepers who held the torch all this time were above reproach and entirely objective? That's a nice lil dodge you've constructed;beats the hell out of admitting you've backed a turkey.Even worse than a turkey Let's operate under the "no spin zone," k? Never said anything you fabricated there.

Why would "an air tight" case take nearly 3 years to come to trial? Ask the Monagasque authorities. Their country, their rules.
Wear someone down for 3 years and then a "confession" comes.
That's an insult to every American POW who honored the Code of Conduct even after the most heinous tortures, beatings, and druggings that the N. Vietnamese could dish out, for a hell of a lot longer than 3 years. And most of them were "common" wing-wipers or aircrew - how much better should a Green Beret have stood up to such "torture."

'That's an insult to every American POW who honored the Code of Conduct "
You forget Nixon changed those rules.
At least be knowledgeable about what the rules are after Viet Nam.

I believe sneakypete said he checked that out and Ted Maher wasn't a Green Beret Interesting. Maher's own brother claims that he is (at this web site).

I am quite knowledgeable about the Code of Conduct, post-Vietnam. I went through SERE school, and the CoC was still quite in effect during my time in service.

Apparently, I was mistaken, I guess he was in the Green Beret; but I refer to this post:
post #302, by sneakypete to Rodney King:
Rodney King: "I think I recall that you were once interested in whether or not this guy was actually a Green Beret."
sneakypete: "No, if I remember correctly, he checked out."
To: nicmarlo
An admittedly cursory web search I did found no corroboration yea or nay from "official" sources I know that Maher was actually in SF. If the Green Berets are anything like the Navy Seals, there are plenty of "vigilantes" out there ready to pounce on anyone who claims to be a Seal when they're actually not. And none of these have come forward to deny that Maher was a Green Beret. So, until evidence is presented to refute it, I guess he was.

Let me know when you understand the rules during Viet Nam and how they changed later.
Then you'll know what I am "babbling" about.
To: strela
The way the post #302 was worded, I was confused and my memory impressed upon me that he was not in the Green Berets.....when I found the post and reread it, I saw I misunderstood.

All you Ted Maher detractors, I hope you're happy. He won't get to come home to his family for the holidays.
