I have a friend, who is legally blind and disabled because of it (he was a CPA), he was doing floors at the mall and his vision became worse and he couldn't see if the workers were doing the job, so he lost his job.

He got $63 in food stamps a month for three months.

63 dollars a month for food.

Did I mention it was $63!

I agree that the statements you mentioned are absurd; however, George Bush is pragmatic and highly intelligent. He gets an A+. In his words, he "has a job to do". He's not showing his hand.

I know of healthy young adults getting HUD and food cards and free health care. The go to the welfare office and declare themselves indigent and unable to find work. They are American born and bred. The sorry fact is that our welfare system feeds on itself. The bureaucrats need clients to justify their own jobs. Handing out welfare benefits to the needy or non-needy is the same to them. The agribusiness industry benefits from the food handouts and that is why it won't be cut back or out. Welfare is so big of an industry that it cannot be eliminated. I see it as encouraging laziness in young people who don't have to work to survive and as they grow older they have no skills or experience to earn a living and thus continue on the dole. Don't have any answers but adding the foreign theives to the mix just escalates the resentment of taxpayers who foot the bill for the benevolence of our elected leaders.

Why not just give out free money? What do we expect anyway? If it can be exchanged for food, it'll be exchanged for money, for drugs, for car repairs. If we're not going to cut off the food stamps altogether, why not cut off these useless investigations and save a few taxpayer nickles there! Food stamps = free money!

Last summer, I went to buy steamed crabs for a special family party. Here in Maryland, crabs are very expensive, as I was waiting, a middle eastern looking man used his "Independence card" (food stamps use a debit card in MD) to buy $100 worth of crabs. As a taxpayer, I am furious that we are forced to feed these people delicacies.

Maybe instead of handing them food stamps or a 'Independence card' and trusting them to use it the way it was intended, they should just be given food. Local food banks could be given extra stores of food for distributing, and people on assistance could go there and receive the items they need. Of course, many would take the food items and try to sell them, but they could be specially packaged with labels that state this is government assistance food, and people who attempt to buy or sell the food illegally will be strapped to a 500 pound bomb and dropped on a Taliban cave in Afghanistan.

He's not showing his hand

He's been in office for 2 years now! When do you think he plans on showing his hand? As long as we're running on this poker playing analogy, then keep in mind the saying "It's time to put up or shut up", which is not directed at you, by the way.
I'm getting sick and tired of hearing everyone say that Bush is just keeping his hold card secret, and that he's gonna make his big move any minute now.
The clock is ticking, and many, many minutes and opportunities have passed by since the first time I heard someone make this defensive claim.
I have voted for Bush in every political race he has been in to date. What have I receieved for my commitment to the cause? Nothing. But I have lost quite a bit. I've lost the illusion that I have certain inalienable rights that are protected by the Constitution. I've lost the illusion that my government's main concern is the protection of it's citizens. I've also lost the illusion that Bush will do what is in the best interest of this country instead of bowing down in front of Vincente Fox and other national leaders.
Color me disillusioned, but I don't believe Bush is holding an ace up his sleeve, waiting on the right time to say "Read 'em and weep".

People always complain about the Mexican immigrants. At least Spanish uses the same alphabet! I live in a neighborhood with a huge Arab Muslim population. You don't want these people on your block, believe me.

Interestingly enough they drive SUVs (many are business owners) but throw trash everywhere, allow their boys to cruise the neighborhood at all hours of the night, while keeping their daughters locked up.

I have a close friend of mine who is a "section 8'er" and he is a far from indigent able bodied 26 year old. There are ads here in New York telling people how great it is to use the "food card" and how it will save them on their groceries.

Thanks for the ping. I always wondered if they could use their food stamps to buy Halal meat.

"Halal" is, of course" the Arab word for "cat."

The answer is self-evident. Most recipients neither need nor really qualify for them But it's "illegal" to check if they're crooks.

Maybe you're right.

These people may have been using fraudulent means to get hold of the food stamps.

Otherwise, it will be nonsensical to quit eating for a month in order to buy a new door.
