Today, November 25, 2002, with the signature of George W. Bush creating the Department of Homeland Security, a milestone in the History of our great country was marked by the death of the Twin Pillars of our society, Freedom and Liberty.
The fight to keep alive these two foundations of our Nation has been a long and arduous one. The mercilous attacks on them have come from politicians on both sides of the aisle in their ever continuing grab for more and more power. Regardless of popular support for the twins, the political class has long sought to bring about their demise. In a "Bi-Partisan" effort both houses of Congress have voted to destroy the most important rights of the People, only a very few of the Congress opposed the death of these important twins.
Those of us who have known these twins for a long time will be very much saddened by their death, and those who have only known them briefly will soon learn how important they were to the Welfare and Security of our Great Country. With the death of Liberty and Freedom it will only be a short time until the Populace of this country will be living under a Dictatorship, controlled by an "Elite" class of politicians who will dictate every facet of our lives.
Requiem In Pacet!
Homeland Security isn't a " boondoggle ". You don't know the meaning of that word. Homeland SEcurity isn't some excuse to expand government. It, with the finally passed rule, that the president CAN fire people, will, if anything, result in a smaller government agancy. Isn't THAT what we all want ?
This is actually one of the most interesting responses I have had. Yes, I do believe "freedom yet lives in these United States." But, that freedom is in spite of the government, not because of it, and it becomes more difficult for those who know how to be free to remain free every day.
There is a fundamental conceptual contradiction between government and freedom. Government cannot provide freedom and all government always decreases freedom, and the bigger (more powerful) a government is the less freedom there is.
Not very many people remain free in the USA, which is actually OK with most people, because they do not want freedom anyway. What most people want is "security," someone that promises to take care of them no matter how much they screw up there lives. As George Bernard Shaw said, "Liberty means responsibility, that is why most men dread it." But, for those who choose to be free, it is still possible in America, though that possiblity is being daily reduced.

A rational person would have exited this prison a long time ago. Why haven't you fled? Do you prefer to rot here in prison with the rest of us? According to tpaine and some of the other miserable whackjobs, we Republicans don't know any better. We believe we have it pretty darn good in this country. But you--you KNOW better.
So why do you stay if liberty and freedom no longer exist here?
Glad to see you're awake, if not sober.
Hank
Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us. It hasn't fallen entirely on deaf ears. Some readers will get it.
Yeah, well, I guess Comet Hale-Bopp was fully booked. They'll have to wait for another swing-through.
Like the guy who worked for the FBI and finked on his bosses because of the crap they pulled at Ruby Ridge. What happened to his career again ...?
Rubbish. Without government, the strong will prey on the weak. Gangs of criminals will feast on the poor, on the handicapped, on the loners, on the ill-nourished. Witness Somalia as well as the lawless regions of Eastern Afghanistan and Western Pakistan, for instance.
Now bring in an American government. Poof, with one fell swoop the gangs lost their total control of the poor and downtrodden in every area controlled by the U.S.
You aren't free when lawless gangs are robbing you or filming your decapitation (e.g. the Wall Street Journal reporter, Perl).
Go to Somalia, Ethiopia, Sierra Leonne, or Zimbabwe and you'll be little more than a walking target until you have nothing left worth stealing. Such is the life under anarchy and chaos, where the strong rule (even if only temporarily) over the weak.
That you would claim otherwise, in fact that you would claim the OPPOSITE, simply illustrates that you have no viable understanding of this world or reality in general.
I'm sure the "wise ones" are packing their bags for the great escape.
Don't forget your Nikes and tutleneck. And don't let the proverbial prison door hit you in the a** on your way out.
I have plans to do so in the future, but I'm praying that it's not too late. With so many sheep like you grazing the pasture, there isn't much reason to stay.
