I just don't understand why Mr. Thune and the GOP are so passive on the SD election results.

On Election Night, Thune seemed strangely passive, and I remember asking myself "what's wrong with this guy?"

I think Fund has nailed it - Thune figures that in heavily Republican SD, he'll have his shot in the future, so it's not worth "sullying" himself in a recount catfight now. He probably wants to avoid looking like an Al Gore "Sore Loserman."

The difference is that in this case, there apparently was fraud, blatant fraud, that cost Thune the race. And Thune's responsibility goes beyond himself. It goes to his party, and above all to the majority of SD voters who probably supported him.

Think 2004. The reason for Thune's graciousness may be found in Ashcroft's stepping aside in 2000. This year, in reaction to what happened in Missouri cities in 2000 and thanks to the squeeky wheel that Sen. Bond became, 400 FBI agents monitored urban polls. The MO Sec of State expected thousands of illegal votes so they created a category called "provisional" by which someone who was not at his polling spot, unsure if he was regsitered, etc., could vote and then his registration would be researched later to see if his count could count. With 400 poll watchers, there were only 600 provisional votes statewide.

Expect Thune to run again, perhaps even against Daschle. Expect FBI agents to watch the polls. Expect the Republican organization to be on top of all absentee applications and counting. This isn't over yet.

The Democrats have a LONG LONG history of doing just this sort of thing. Right after the Civil War the Rats would take the Blacks down to the polling place hold a gun to their head and tell them to vote Rat.

It was the Rats that passed the laws to keep the blacks from voting, until they discovered that they could use the Blacks to get reelected.

I think Mr Thune did the right thing, with the country going more right and the Rats going more left, just wait and see. The Rats lost some MAJOR races this year, they are still unaware just how much the Clintons hurt there party.

The recount would have been handled by both Democrats and Republicans. The Florida recounts showed everyone that Democrats are willing to cheat, while Republicans aren't.
Therefore, Johnson would have gained votes in the recount. You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em.

I believe that John Thune is currently taking the high road to avoid all the mud-slinging that would arise out of challenging the fraudulent vote.

Because he will be back to challenge Daschle and he will WIN!

(Of course, all these voting irregularities will have been investigated by other individuals and then solved with the presence of poll watching and stricter voter identification.)

That would be a huge mistake by the Dems. I'd demand a recount just to make them try to "beat" me up.
