Well, no argument from me on his stupidity. Glad they caught the old pervert! Of course, he will scream entrapment.

A buck says he walks. He didn't actually have sex with an underage girl, so not a day of jail time.

"We can't be lovey-dovey in public," the stupidity expert explained to his new young friend. "Bottom line, I'm committing a crime." She could call him "Dad" when they met at a Denny's in Lantana, said Welles, who also has a Ph.D in biology. Then they could go to his car and have sex, he suggested -- but backed away from that plan when he realized his windows were not tinted enough to ensure privacy.
Its so funny, I had to repeat it.

A guy in Kalifornia was convicted for a similar sting. I'm sure there is and FR link.

Yeah, but just
discussing an illegal activity is a crime in Amerika.
Meanwhile I'm sure the Lantana PD has plenty of unsolved cases in it's files, none of which were committed by this 61 yr. old.

I'm glad they're catching these guys, but I always have a nagging doubt about whether not this is really entrapment. Notice this line:
It took about three weeks to get to the point he was willing to commit a crime, Dwyer said.
I thought the job of the police was to prevent crime, not to work three weeks getting someone willing to commit one. Maybe its the way he worded it. I suppose the point is, if this had really been a 15-year old girl, the same thing could have happened, and at least this guy won't have an opportunity to do that for a while.
There's a better way I think:
A lot of this stuff could be stopped if parents would just have the guts to remember they are the adults and are responsible for what happens to their children. Spy on 'em. Better they get upset with you than they get raped or murdered, and someday they'll thank you for loving them enough to save them in spite of themselves.
Why shouldn't we do this for our children. The government and liberals think nothing of doing this to grown adults, saving us from smoking and driving without seat belts or riding without helmets.

It took about three weeks to get to the point he was willing to commit a crime, Dwyer said.I wonder how smart this cop is. This is the type of thing cops are unofficially told NOT to admit, specifically because it sets up an entrapment defense.
Naturally, one of the things that should keep 61 yr olds and 15 yr olds apart is the perception on the part of the 61 yr old that nobody that young would be interested in him. This assumption was operating in the fellow's head before the cop gave him a different impression. Dunno if the guy deserves jailtime for hitting on a 40 yr old cop, but I can certainly think of better uses of police resources.
Reminds me of the bums who get to sit in strip clubs for 10 hours at a time waiting to see if a "no contact" rule is violated -- often by having the stripper violate the rule by touching the very cops operating the sting. They even get cash to lead the girls on! Nice work if you can get it!

Entrapment big time. The guy is an idiot and is guilty of being stupid. Sounds like the cop had to twist his arm to get him to attempt breaking the law. Seducing lonely old men over the internet proves nothing and protects nobody. If the old codger was really trying to hook up with a fifteen year old, I am sure he could find one selling herslf on the streets of Miami. Perhaps the cops could work from that angle instead and perhaps save a few young girl's lives. I wonder how many taxpayer funded man hours went into seducing this old guy.

Here is something even better - and it should give you a soft on for a month. Imagine the sensuous way in which the Lantana cop talked, and how thrilled Mr. Stupid was when he read the words. Heheheh. How erotic!

OMG - I have this book! It's not the best on its topic (that would be Paul Satori's A Natural History of Stupidity), but it's quite a good read, if you can handle all the stupidity detailed therein.

I am also uncomfortable with this. He never really talked (or chatted) with an underage girl, met an underaged girl or had any sexual contact with an underage girl. So, how can he be guilty of doing anyting involving an underage girl?
To: marshmallow
For the last three weeks the author had been corresponding, in increasingly explicit terms, not with a teenage girl but with a 40-year-old male detective, going slightly gray at the temples, sitting in an office at the Lantana Police Department. LOL! Jeez, soliciting sex with a minor on the internet is just plain stupid. Practicall ALL the "teenage girls" are cops just like half of all militia members are feds.
